. Auckland, Monday. Mrs. Major Oroker has been confined to bed since receiving sentence at the Supreme Courl. New Plymouth, Monday. Ithavingappeared in print, and being brought to Rewi’s notice, that he did not invite Sir G. Grey to Waitara, Rewi writes to a settler, for publication,' as follows. The letter appears in the Taranaki Herald to-day : “ Waitara, July 6.—1 have seen the newspaper that says I did not invite Sir George Grey to Waitara. This is not correct. I did ask him to come to Waitara to have a talk over our special business, and he came at my invitation. We were the cause of the trouble.— Na Makga Maniopoto.” Napieb, Monday. At a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council to-day a motion by Mr. Sutton, M.H.R., to.abolish toll-gates was negatived ; and also an amendment to continue them for only one year. The decision arrived at was to put the tolls up to auction in the usual way. There is some talk again here about starting a new paper, but nothing definite is yet known about it.
There is a movement on foot to call a public meeting, in order to bring pressure to bear upon the Municipal Council for the speedy abatement of the swamp nuisance. It appears that the Swamp Nuisance Act, though it empowers the Council to reclaim sections belonging to private persona and recoup themselves the cost by selling the land, gives no recourse against section owners in case the sections-do not realise the cost of reclaiming. Hence the dilatoriness of the Borough Council in proceeding with the work of reclaiming. Christchurch, Monday.
Last night someone got into the vestry of St. John’s Church and broke open the cupboard and a small cabinet, in the hope of finding the communion plate, or money, but to no purpose, as these are always kept in tho parsonage. Government have informed the Road Boards Conference committee by telegram that accounts showing the deductions made from land revenue have boon prepared, and will be .issued shortly. In the menutime the Conference are to have the legal opinion of Mr. Joyut on the matter on Tnursday, and circulars have been issued to all county councils and road boards in Canterbury, requesting co-operation in resisting the action of the Government. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day several merchants wore summoned for keeping kerosene for sale without marking tho same “ Dangerous.” • All the cases .were dismissed with a caution, Ahaura, Monday. Yesterday a young man named Alick Scalley, well known on the West Coast, was thrown from his horse on the Ahaura plains, and kicked. JGe sustained a compound fracture of his leg, but is otherwise uninjured. The sufferer was conveyed to, Greymouth, Hospital.
