A steerage passenger, named Alexander llsou, fell overboard and was drowned from the ship Soukar on her passage from London to Lyttelton. The steamers Arawata for Melbourne via tbe Smth, ami Taiaroa for the South, both left the wharf last evening. Tho Taranaki, for the Manukau and intermediate ports, sailed yesterday evening. The barque Kentish Tar, bound to Nelson from London, was spoken on the 6bh April in lat. lodeg. 13mia. N., long. 25deg W. Tha Taiaroa left Manukau on Tuesday at 3 p.ra, and arrived off Taranaki at 10 a.m. next day; but fwingtotbe heavy sea rolling on tho beach it was found impossible to land any cargo. Tho passengers were, however, landed, and she left again at noon, Arriving at Nelson at 7 o’clock on Thursday morning; . left there at 5 p.m, the same day, ami arrived at Wellington wharf early yesterday morning. Had weather was experienced throughout the passage. The Taiaroa loft again for the South shortly after 3 o'clock. The following letter, dated Freemantle, Gth Juno, from the captain of the Cralgio Leo, has been kindly handed to ns for publication by Messrs. Levin and Co.:—“ We had .a fair passage from London to 45deg. 15aec. S. and S2sec. E., when the ship got disabled. We were running under lower topsails and foresail on 2nd May, blowing a strong gale, with very high sea running, and increasing as the night came on. At 5 a.m. on May 3 a sea broke over the st«rn, carrying away tho wheel, damaging tho skylights and companion, and se.it a great quantity of water down the cabin and half-deck; At 6.30 the seas went over again, and broke the boats out of the skids, and tile foremost skid curried away. Ship filled all over ; I then decided to heave-fca. At 8.30 a sea swept over her. carrying away the port bulwarks, and started the chain-plate? in fore rigging. The longboat, galley, 1 and all casks wore also smashed, leaving tho decks full of wreckage. The shipped rolled heavily, and the scoa were continually going over her tho after bulwarks went. The gale continued without any abatement, and r.hc seas ran with tremendous force and height. Eight men got disabled and were nntit for work. On Monday, May 3, at 10 a.m,, tho fore and main topgallant mast and mizentopmaat carried away. We got tho wreck cleared away forward, but before wo could get it clear aft the main topmast went ov?r tho side. It still continued to blow a perfect hurricane, and I had to lie-to till Wednesday, when wes.mpert a northerly course. The ship was completely wrecked and shattered alow and aloft. Fore-rigging and chain-plates were gone, and I had to pas? a chain round tho bottom to set tackle* up to hold the mast. Tho decks were strained all over, and the heavy seas constantly going in on the deck started the ring-bolts that tho spare spars were lashed to. I decided on goingto Freemantle, as the ship was not in a condition to go on to her destination, and it was tbe nearest port where I thought to get repaired. We have discharged about 200 barrels of cement, and some of them are saturated—all are damaged ; a deal of ernes are damaged, and we are discharging them ; but it is a difficult job to discharge here, as tho lighters cannot lie alongside sometimes for ten or twelve days on account of tho heavy sea in the anchorage. Lloyd's agent and surveyor have surveyed hatches and cargo. Acting according to my own Judgment and their advice, I am landing all that is damaged, and when it is landed it will bo opened and surveyed. Goods that arc not damaged too much to take on will bo re-shlpped; tho rest will be sold. Tbe iron, of course, is badly rusted, but It will get no worse, Tho repairs will take at least two monD.jg from to-day.
