PALMERSTON NORTH.
(from our own correspondent). - ' t June 14.
Jonathan Jackson, about whom I wired you on Monday last, has not yet been heard of. Search parties have been outfintil now, but all hopes of finding his body are abandoned. He leaves a widow and several small children.
On Tuesday night, about half-past ten o’clock, Mr, Win. Akers’ wheat ricks were totally destroyed by fire. It is: supposed to be the work of an incendiary. Tho Bank of Australasia have purchased from Mr.' Waldegrave section No. 1. This section is a corner ouo, and contains a quarter of an acre. The price paid was £SOO. They are about to build a bank upon it forthwith. Tho Bank of New Zealand have an offer of several eligible sections for the’same purpose, and will - without doubt also be building shortly. They certainly want a new building badly. The Sothern Comedy Company performed here on Monday and Tuesday nights. Whether the small attendance had anything to do with their acting of not’ I cannot say, but I fancy that it they came again they would baye even smaller audiences.’ I understand that: a concert will shortly be given in aid of the hospital, The building da question was.until lately the Government barracks; but has now been given to the town by the Government. It requires furnishing and fitting up; and this is the first step towards doing so. Messrs. Thyrine, Linton, and Co. held their first auction sale on Wednesday last, when they offered fruit trees,- ornamental trees; shrubs, &0., from the gardens of Mr. Laird, 'of- Wanganui. As a rule good prices were realized, and everything offered was sold.
