A NEW MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS. (from a correspondent.) Gisborne, Saturday. There is great excitement here over the utterances of that eminent barrister W. 0. Rees. He has publicly announced that if the report of Sir John Goode is favorable for a breakwater, and cost does not exceed £200,000, he will have it constructed within six months ; he has also assured the public that he will have a railway from the breakwater up the north side of the river through to Opotiki. (PEE PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Saturday. Sir John Coode did not examine the Auckland harbor to-day, but has been inspecting plans and data. This evening he will confer with the harbormaster and the engineer to the board. He will positively leave per City of New York on Tuesday. Sir George Grey, Mr. Sheehan, and Hoani Nahe leave per Hinemoa for Wellington at half past eight o’clock this evening. Mr. Sheehan will return to visit the Northern native meeting of Kingites, which will take place about the middle of June, to receive final proposals. Timber has risen to 14s. Gd. per 100 feet in consequence of the difficulty of supplying the mills. . New Plymouth, Saturday. Telegrams having appeared in different parts of the colony, to the effect that Major Atkinson intends to resign his seat in the House of Representatives, and to retire from politics, the Press Agent here has been requested to contradict the statement authoritatively. Gueymouth, Saturday. The official declaration of the Grey Valley election was made to-day, when the numbers were declared as follows : —Reeves, 487; Harrison, 302; Barrowman, 209 ; Newton (who withdrew), 25. Dunedin, Sunday. The Mayor gave his annual dinner last night. It was well attended, but the speeches were merely of a complimentary character. Brother Harman arrived in Dunedin yesterday, and was entertained last night at a social gathering. Messrs. Sydney James, W. P. Street; George Watson, and Harry Bayliss wore to-day nominated as city auditors. • Invercargill, Saturday. The decision of the Board of Inquiry rc the wreck of the Ann Gambles was not given to-day in consequence of further evidence having been offered. The Court will sit again on Monday afternoon. 1
