THE PHŒNIX GOLD MINE, COLLINGWOOD.

Tho prospects of the Phoenix Gold Mine at Collingwood appear to ,be, very encouraging, arid if the result turns out anything like what is anticipated, apparently on reliable data, the promoters of the undertaking, who are nearly all Wellington men, may be congratulated on the success attending their : enterp ise. Captain McGee, of the steamer Wellington, informed us yesterday that Captain Walker, who is a large shareholder in the, concern, had arrived the previous day in Nelson; from the mine, and that gold was showing on the table’s; so thickly that the manager hold decided to clean up much sooner than had been originally intended. On their lata visit to Collingwood the directors of the company had left it to the manager’s discretion to clean up in about a month or five weeks/ but as ; matters have turned out this will be done, almost immediately, and with every liklihood of a good yield. Some very nice specimens of auriferous quartz from this mine are on view in the window of Mr. Kohn’s jewellery establishment on Lambton-qnay, which have attracted much notice and favorable comment from the passers-by. The result of Dr. Hector’s analysis of the specimens forwarded to him oh the 26th hit./ ami reported upon by him on the 6th and ISfeh inst., was as follows :—” The, quartz,, with pyrites from the pyrites ree', received in a ground state, yields to simple amalgamation gold at the rate of 19dwts. 12grs. per ton. 1 The remainder of the pyrites,; when thoroughly exhausted, yields gold at the rate of 3'iz-r 4dwts. 6grs. per ton, or a total yield of 4ozs. 3dwts. ISgrs.; per ton.” As it is estimated that about half-an-ounee'of gold to the ton will pay, if the rest of the stuff turns out at all like that, which has been crushed, the shareholders will, in miners’ phraseology, have “ struck a good patch ” on this occasion. We understand that Captain Walker, who had placed some of his shares in the market* has withdrawn them from sale in consequence of the apparently excellent prospects of the company. ■ ■ . ■ ■ _
