PALMERSTON NORTH.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) ; '- ' May 16. ■ ' The 'concert in aid of the Sunday-school tookplaCe lastnight, arid in spite of the threatening aspect of the weather the largest audience. I have yet seen iu Palmerston attended. The performance, taken as a whole,, was.; very creditable to the performers, and if the amount of applause and encores may be taken as ri criterion, was much ■ appreciated by .the audience. The financial result, was, solar as, could be ascertained last, night, about. £l3 clear profit, after paving all expenses, which will be duly handed over to trustees for the use of the Sunday-school. After the concert there was a very enjoyable dance, which was kept up until nearly three o’clock in the morn-, ing. • Some alarm was felt in the town owing to the proloriged absence of three of the inhabitants, who had gone out shooting. They, however, tamed up yesterday safe ' and sound, having been lost in the bnsh on the far aide of the river for two days. v ■ 1 L I understand that at the next meeting of the local tire brigade the question of that body disbanding is to be discussed.; Although lam uot surprised at this, seeing that the fire insurance companies have finally declined to giye the town a fire-engine,'that-the brigade have been ‘refused the free use of the Foresters' Hall for their meet ngs, and that the greater part of the inhabitants appear unwilling to support it in any ; way ; yet I think it is a matter to be much, regretted, as even during the short time the brigade has been in existence, and with the very limited appliances they possess, they have saved a large amount of property, how much it is impossible to estimate. , ,-i ■ ■

i lam informed that the Mayor will proclaim; Monday next to be a general holiday in honor of the railway to Wanganui being opened to the public on that day.
