THE FRANCHISE.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, — Lists of persons not entitled to have their names retained on the rolls for Wellington City, Wellington Country, and Hutt Districts having been duly published in your columns and those of your contemporaries, I would ask, through the medium of your journal, why an opportunity is not afforded to bona fide new claimants of reading the names of the persons who have recently claimed the privilege of exercising the franchise. It has come within my knowledge that a number of new claimants have filled up the printed forms without possessing the necessary qualification, and it certainly appears to me that if the revising officer or registration officer intends to perform an important duty exactly “ according to Cooker," the same opportunity of objecting to “ duffers” should be afforded in the matter ef the “ new claimants’ list ’’ as is now apparently afforded to revising officers in reference to the old roll by striking off the “ dead-’uns”—a few of whom, by-the-bye, will be alive and active enough, on the day of hearing objections, to assert their claims as living citizens having a right to vote. In order, howver, to satisfy a great number who are curious in the matter, I would suggest that a list of “new claimants” be published, now that we have seen in print the names of those objected to on the old roll.—l am, &c., An Elector.
