The Leucadla. from London, and May, from Hong kong, commenced discharging yesterday, Iheircargoesaro turning ont in excellent condition. The brig Neptune left for Newcastle yesterday morning, but being unable to beat out against the strong southerly breeze, had to run back to an anchorage in Worser Bay. ' . ; The s s. Taupo is expected here this forenoon from Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. She will leave for Auckland via the East Coast at 8 a.m. to-morrow. The s.s. Wellington, for Pieton, Nelson, and Colllngwood, sailed at 1 p.m. yesterday. The ketch Ocean Bird pat into port yesterday through stress of weather. She is on a voyage from Waitapu bound for Nelson with a cargo of white pine, and loft the former place on Monday last. Experienced head winds to Stephens Island, where she met with a N.W. breeze, which carried hero as far as Capo Campbell. There, however, the wind backed Into the southward with every indication of increasing to a gale, and tho captain deemed it prudent to run for this port, arriving as above stated.: The Union Co.’s s.s. Wanaka arrived here from the Bay of Islands, Auckland, and East Coast ports at 7.80 a.m. yesterday. She reports having left tho Bay of Islands at 0.15 p.m. on tho 30th alt., and arrived at Auckland at 7 a,m. next day; sailed on the 2nd May at 6.30 p.m., and arrived at Teuranga at 7 a.ra. on tho 3rd; left at 8.13a.m,, and anchored in Poverty Bay next day at 0.30 a.m.; left again at 5.15 p.m., and arrived at Hawke's Bay on Sunday at 5,30 a.m.; sailed again at 10.46, and arrived here as above stated. Experienced strong north-west winds from Bussell to Auckland, and light variable winds and fine weather thence. The s.s, Napier sailed for Blenheim at 12 o clock last night. • The Jane Douglas will sail for Foxton this evening. Tho Bangatita, for Napier and Poverty Bay, and Tui, for Foxton and Kaikoura, sailed shortly after 6 O’clock last evening. Tho ship Windsor Castle, one of Messrs. Green's Blackwall line, commanded by Captain N. Harrison, 8.N.8., has arrived In London, having made the passage from Brisbane In 78 days, tho fastest on record. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s ship Walpa, Captain Gore, which left Port Chalmers on January 19, arrived at London on April 18, after a passage of Hannah Broomileid arrived here from Kaipara yesterday morning a; 8 o’clock, with a full cargo of kanri timber, Bho left there on Tuesday evening last with an easterly wind, but same night a heavy N.E. breeze was encountered, which lasted all Thursday. Next day experienced a calm; accompanied by a. heavy westerly sea, and on Saturday beat against a south-easter as far as Stephens island ; thence experienced n N.W. breeze, and, reached the Heads on Sunday night, arriving here yesterday as above stated. • She was berthed at tho wharf during the day to discharge. , . . . The Orient Steam Shipping Company's first-class steamer Garonne arxivedal Port Philip on Aprill 24th, ftbm London, via the Capo of Good Hope, after an excellent passage of Uttlo over 41 days, and is stated to bo both externally and internally very much like the steamers that have preceded her in tho newlyestablished Cape route, viz., tho Cuzco, Lusitania, and Chimborazo. She was built at Glasgow by Messrs. Nan'er and Co. for her former owners, and her dimensions are Length, 328 ft; breadth, 41ft 4in; depth of hold, 35ft 71n. giving her a gross register of 3878 tons. Tho engines are also from Napiers factory, and are on the compound principle, with inverted cylinders, and are surface condensing. Tho cylinders are 104 inches and SO Inches respectively, and tho force of tho engine Is

equal to 3000 horso powereffective. The machinery is massive in its proportions, but is wonderfully smooth in working.- In addition to driving the vessel the steam pjwer is utilised otherwise in working the winches, windlass, Ac., and is alsdmadeuseof for hoisting purposes, while, from its being applied to the. steering gear, this colossal vessel is handled as easily; as a yacht. In case of emergency, the Garonne ia.flttea with means and appliances for the extinction of fire; and she is wcli supplied with boats, conspicuous among' which is a handsome steam launch..
