CRICKET.
A cricket match was played yesterday, in Mr. Whitehead’s paddock, between the Drapers and Grocers, which resulted in a victory for the latter by 35 runs. Mr. Ryan captained the Grocers and Mr. E. Hare officiated similarly for the Drapers. The dealers in teas and sugars were the first to handle the willow, being represented by Ensor and Mitchell against the bowling of the brothers O. and E. Hare. In the first over Ensor retired by a shooter from C. Hare, and the next over proved fatal to Mitchell. Wilkinson was the first to make a stand, and he contributed 10 before he was disposed of. The only other player wh® reached double figures was Sutcliffe, who made the top score of 11, which he obtained in a very creditable manner. The innings closed for 43. The bowling of the two Hares was very good, and the fielding on the whole was creditable.
The Drapers were not long in making their appearance at the wickets, determined if possible to head their opponents’ score. In this, however, they were disappointed. ‘ The first two sent in were Simpson and Mayhew, and at one time it looked as if they were going to make a stand. They were, however, both disposed of after making 7 and 9 respectively. The rest of the wickets, with the exception of Rossiter’s, fell in a most lamentable manner. Ryatt bowled in good form, and toek no less than eight wickets. The fielding of the Grocers, considering that they have had little or no practice, was very good.
After a short interval, the Grocers went in again with the determination of making a 1 stand ; but like their friends in the clothing-
line; ■ they - were - doomed -to ■ disappointment, Ensor kept his stumps up the whole of the innings, but only added 9to the score, Dobsou made a tolerably good stand, and played a fair innings for 12. The only other pian who reached double figures was Hyatt with 11. The innings closed for 71.
Matters looked pretty gloomy for the Drapers, and the match was considered a certainty for their opponents. The first man (Simpson) was clean bowled in his first over by Kyatt. The only two who made any stand at all *?ere Hossiter and 0. Hare, and these only added 13 between them. The whole eleven made 19. The longstop of the Grocers, however, was leniently disposed towards his adversaries, and let no loss that 9 balls pass him; these, with 3 wides, brought up the score to 32. The match was concluded by 3 o’clock.
