Tlie Ngatiraukawa tribe beg the Native Minister to have a European officer resident in their district to examine all disputes between natives, and also a post on the road from Cambridge to Taupo. At the Waste Lands Board a letter from Mr. Vesey Stewart stated that he had made all arrangements for a second party of special settlers, but charged Sir Julius Vogel with factious opposition with the intent to obstruct the scheme. The Board referred the correspondence to Government.
Judge Gillies has been elected chairman of the grammar school governors. Alexandra, Tuesday. The great native meeting will positively take place on the 30th instant. Tavvhiao is here to-day. Paora tu Haere returned yesterday. Tatjranga, Tuesday. The Wolverine, with the Governor, Commodore Hoskins, and the Hon. Mr. Fisher and party, sailed at 2 p.m. to-day for Auckland. Napier, Tuesday. Mr. M. E. Miller reports the sale on the 13th instant of Allan McDonald’s Pouawa property, at Gisborne, containing 19,200 acres, leasehold, at a rental of £IOO per annum, having 16 years to run, and 112 acres freehold, with all improvements and 14,000 sheep, to Mr. Doull, of Mataura, Otago, for £16,000 sterling. Gisborne, Tuesday. Duncan’s bakery was totally destroyed by fire last night. The origin of the fire is not known. It was insured in the Norwich Union for £2OO ; stock and furniture in , South British for £3OO. William Cooper’s house on Whakatautu run was • burnt to the ground. The library and furniture, valued at £IOOO, were destroyed. The total loss is estimated at £3OOO. No insurance. The policy had just lapsed. A messenger was coming into town at the time of the fire to renew the insurance, but arrived too late. Christchurch, Tuesday. The two men who were arrested for being concerned in the recent garroting case have been committed for trial.
The racecourse privileges for the Autumn Meeting only realized £75. The walking match, Bowley v. Pentecost, 50 miles, has been postponed for three weeks owing to the illness of Pentecost. Betting for the Great Autumn Handicap : 4 to 1 agst Templeton, 4 to 1 Longlands, 5 to 1 Ariel, 7 to 1 Trump Card, 8 to 1 Bide-a-wee, 10 to 1 agst the others. Lawrence, Tuesday.
Some sixty applications were made yesterday at the Survey Office for land under agricultural leases in Tuapeka West, Table Hill, and Waitahuna East districts. There were also a number of applications for laud under the deferred payment sj stem in the same neighborhood. Throughout the whole of the day the office was fairly besieged with applicants.
An inquiry into the origin of the fire which destroyed Monaghan’s shop was held last evening, when the jury returned a verdict to the effect that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated. Steps are being taken to re-form the fire brigade, which was disbanded a few months ago.
