There have been but few large , lines changing hands, sales being in the majority of cases confined to the supply of current wants, both the country and outport orders coming in freely. The building trade shows great activity, both stores and private houses going up in ail parts of the city, house accommodation being still insufficient for our increasing population, which now numbers 20,000. Mr. N. J. Our arrivals during the month have been the Elver Lovett, 725 tons, from Glasgow, on March 4th ; Gainsborough, 024 tons, from London, on March Bth; Lord of the Isles, 057 tons, from London, on 10th March; Lanarkshire, 794 tons, from London, on March 23rd. The Hnrunui sailed on March 3rd, for London, with the following cargo:—4lsl bales wool, value £74,605; 241 casks tallow, 32 halos skins, 12 sacks hides, I bundle whalebone, 173 plates spelter, 59 packages leather, 200 cases preserved meat, 3 tons bones, 5 tons old iron, 1 ton lead, value £5023 ; 5162 ounces gold, value £.20,003. Total value, £100,290. The Renfrewshire sailed for Adelaide on'March 10th; -John E. Stanhope, for Newcastle, N.S.W., on March 14th. The Eialto and Carnatic are loading at the wharf for London, to sail shortly. The following vessels are advertised as loading for Wellington, or have sailed Crafgrnullen, 761 tons, sailed December 4th; Oanmorc, 729 tons, sailed January 17th; Lcacailia, 890 tons, sailed January 15th; Craigio Lea, 021 tons, loading .January 6th; Pleione, 1100 tony, loading. Brom New York; BophiaLewer. sailed; Star, loading. Brom Singapore: May, sailed Bcbruary 15th, Irom Adelaide : Southern Cross, sailed.
Rates of freight to London.—Grease wool, gd per lb.; washed do, per lb.; tallow, in cases, 00s; in casks, 70s; and hides, 55s per ton. Bank Rates.—Exchange lorbillson London—On demand, 2 per cent. premium; at3odays,l£ percent, do; at CO days, 1 per cent, do; at 00 days, £ per cent. do. The banks’ buying rates are—For bills at 90 days. 1 discount; CO days, £ discount: 30 days, par. Discount on local bills, under 95 days, 7 pet cent.; under 125 days,- 8 per cent.; over 125 days, 9 per cent. Interest allowed. on deposits lodged tor 3 months, per cent, ; for 0 mouths, 5 per cent.; for 12 months, 5£ per cent. , The Suez mall arrived hero on the 7th March, and the San Francisco mail on the 15th March. Ale and porter (dutv, paid ; bulk. Is, per gallon ; bottled, Is. 3d.)—Slocks of bottled ale continue largely in excess of the wants of the trade, and most of the transactions coming under nntice arc small and confined to current wants. The Bulldog brand is mostly in request, and sells readily at 12s per dozen. Other brands range from 0s to 11s Cd per dozen, stouts being about the same figure. Balk ales are in full stocks at from £0 to £9 10s per hhd for Bass, A Isopp’s, and Younger’s , Bags and woolpacks (duty, 10 per cent). —uornsacks meet with'limited enquiry, and prices are easier. Holders quote 10s 3d to 10sCd per dozen for trade lots., Woolpacks, season being over there is no demand. Stocks in importer’s hands moderate. Candles (duty. Id per lb).—Full stocks of sperm candles on hand, and fully 4000 boxes now lauding ex Lord of the Isles and Lanarkshire, but as the season for their use is now drawing near, we may look for improved demand. In tho meantime, quotations for Price’s Belmonts remain at lOd to to 9jd per lb. , , . ... Cement (duty. Is per barrel).—The demand for this article continued good, and most of the stocks on hand having been quilted, the stock has become less. shipments being on the way, quotations are weaker. Wo report tho sale of 250 barrels, to arrive, at 17s (id. _ . , Coffee (duty, 3d per lb).- Plantation coffee in bond remains at Is 2sd to Is 3d per lb, with usual trade demand. Chicory (duly. Sd per lb).— Foreign chicory is quoted at Gd to Cjd per lb, but meets with little inquiry, the colonial grown article being preferred at the same figure. Confectionery (duty, 2d per lb).—Usual trade demand for Keiller’s make at lOd to 10£d per lb, tho article being gradually superseded by the colonial manufacture. Flour (duty, 20s per ton).—Adelaide flour has shown further symptoms of unsteadiness during the month, and sales have been made at £l7 10s per ton, at which rate it remains for the present. Tho Southern Cross is now overdue, having 200 tons on board, and as the price of Southern flour shows a continued decline we do not look for any improvement. Fruits (duty, Id per lb).— Only a moderate amount of trade is reported in dried fruit, owing to the large quantities of green fruit brought into the market. Currants move off slowly at 4|d per lb, prices having fallen in the English market. Eleme raisins are dull at Cd : Sultanas, lb. according to condition ; tigs, Ci to Sd per lb, sales being of a retail character only. Hops (duty, 3d per lb)—There are no English hops in merchants’ hands. A small shipment of Bavarian hops was cleared at Is 5d to Is 7d per lb; Californian is quoted at Is 2d, but meets with small favor from the brewers, who prefer the colonial grown. Malt (duty. Is Gd per bushel).—There is no English malt in stock. Colonial is chiefly used, and is worth Ss 3d to 8s Cd per bushel. , . Metals (duty, 10 per cent; corrugated iron and iron wire, 20s per ton).—Large parcels of corrugated iron are being landed out of every ship, and affect prices in spite of the amount of building going forward. Braby’s Sun brand is selling at £2B to £3O; other brands. £2O to £23. Fencing wire is in full supply at £ls. £ls 12sCd, £lO ss, for Nos. 0,7, and S. Sheet lead and zinc in fair demand at £27 to £27 10s per ton for tho former, and £3O 10s to £37 10 per ton for the latter. , Oils (duty, Gd per gallon).—Kerosene remains at last mouth's rates of Is 10(4 to Is lid per gallon; stocks being moderately ample. Shipments advised are only moderate, viz,, 900 cases per Sophia Lowers and 1500 by the Star, and prices will probably improve in consequence as the winter season approaches. Oilmen’s Stores (duty. 10 per cent).—Trade in these goods has been dull, and stocks are increasing on Importers’ hands, prices yielding a bare margin of profit. Salt (free).—Market fully supplied with both fine and coarse salt at 75s to 80s per ton. Spirits (duty, 12s per gallon),—We report no change in values of spirits. Martell’s and Honnessy s brandies remain at 9s Cd to 9s 9d per gallon for quarters, and at 32s Cd to 33s for case : other brands at lower rates according to public estimation, although we have noticed one or two outside brands of a quality superior to the popular brands, and which are gradually making way in public favor. <7 p rum is dull at 3s 0d to 3s lOd : scotch whisky, 4s to 5s Gd per gallon according to demand : Dunville’s Irish, 5s Cd to 5s 9d for bulk, 17s for case. We report the sale of 250 cases at ICs Cd for shipment to the coast. Lome whisky we quote at 19s Gd to 20s ; Kinahan’s, 20s to 21s per dozen. Little doing in Geneva at lls Cd to 17s Cd per C! Sugar (duty. Id. per lb,)— Sugars are a shade lower than last mouth’s rates, and are quoted at, for Ho, 2 AV, £46; IC. £45; C, £4O 10s, and Y. £3910s per lon, for Sydney Refinery Company’s sugars._ We understand that this company have closed their works with a view to altering their machinery to suit the manufacture en the Yarraville principle, which, though cheaper to the company, does not turn out a sugar equal to that under the old system, and should lead to an increased consumption of Mauritius sugars. They expect to turnout from 400 to 500 tons per wees. AVe expect a parcel of 90 tons from the Mauritius shortly, and a shipment of 100 tons is coming forward in the May from Hongkong, now shortly due Brewers’crystals are In fair demand at £44 per ton- English crushed loaf at £56 to £SB per ton. Tea (duty, 6d. per lb.)—Fair trade doing in teas at moderate rates. . ~ _ Tobacco (duty, 2s Gd per lb); cigars (duty, 5s per lb) —Usual trade doing, with little change in quotations. Favorite brands of twist are worth Is 4d to Is (fid per lb : Venus tens. Is Oil. Wines (duty, 4s per gallon).—Fair trade doing in wines of good quality at paying rates.
■ COLONIAL PRODUCE. Butter.—Keg butter has been dull of sale, and meets with only limited Inquiry for local consumption. Prime care cannot be quoted higher than 7Jd to 8d per lb. , , ~ , Cheese.—Full stocks of Canterbury make, which move off steadily at OJd to 7d per lb. ... Bacon and Hams.—Large quantities of inferior cure are forced off by auction at nominal prices. Prime cloth-packed is worth from 7id to 8d per lb. Flour. —Canterbury and Oamaru flour continues to be sold at a low figure, notwithstanding the endeavor to force prices up, and our anticipations of low rates this season are fully borne out. AVe report sales of first brands of flour at £l2los per ton, with no present prospect of higher rates. Grain.—Oats have been in moderate supply, and have shown little tendency to altered rates. AVe quote 4s to 4s Id. for prime samples. Maize, dull of sale at 4s, but prices having advanced in the Australian markets, we cannot expect them to remain at this low figure. Other grain nominal, and in little demand ; sales of chicken wheat are reported at 3s 3d per bushel. Potatoes.—Full supplies, at 70s to 75s per ton. Timber.—Sawn timber conlinues in active demand, and quotations for cargoes from tho coast are as follows: —Pine boards and scantling, lls Cd to 12s per 100 feet; kauri, 14s to 15s: totara, 15s to 17s per 100 ft, Mr. George Thomas reports:—Flour, £l3 to £l3 10$; oats, 4s 3(1; bran, Is 2d; wheat. 4s; hams, Od: bacon, 8d: cheese, 7J(1: maize, 5s 3d; pollard, £7; potatoes, £4 15s to £5; butter, lOd.
