The cricketing committee entertained the Australians on a fishing excursion to-day, chartering a steamer for the purpose. Wanganui, Tuesday. Opinions seem equally divided as to the Dolly Warden crew and the Lyttelton men for the big race. The Christchurch crew are not expected to have a chance. The excitement is intense, as both crews have strong partisans. If anything the Dolly Warden are the greater favorites of the two ; but “ Bargee,” iu tonight’s Hemld, gives choice to the Lyttelton men. The Lyttelton men have great difficulty about getting a coxswain, as their boy is a bad stoerer. Summing up all the chances, the Dolly Warden crew seem to have the preference, for choice. Taupo, Tuesday. A Maori girl fell off her horse here yesterday, aud when picked up she was found to be quite dead. A severe case of sunstroke occurred on Sunday to a native woman. The Government intend enlarging this township. A lot of five-acre sections are to be laid off on the road to the hot springs. Balolutha, Tuesday. The steam boiler at Jackman’s saw-mills, Glenora, burst at both ends yesterday forenoon. Although six men were working at the mill, none were hurt, aud little damage was done beyond the injury to the boiler. Flames were discovered below the shop of Cowie, the saddler, here at one o’clock this morning. They were extinguished, and then kerosene rags were found, and but for the discovery of the fire in a few minutes more the whole block of buildings could not have been saved. The fire was evidently the work of an incendiary. The police have iimstigated the matter, but as yet have no clue to tlie guilty party, Tauranga, Tuesday. To-day the telephone was tried by Mr. Floyd, the electrician, through a resistance equal to 700 miles of perfectly insulated wire, with entire success. The sound reached the receiving instrument as distinctly, though a little fainter, than when it only travelled through a few yards of wire. Hokitika, Tuesday. Yesterday three Greek fishermen from Wellington got on the Wairau Bar. The boat capsized and sank. One of the crew swam ashore, and the two others kept afloat with the help of oars. The Napier came down and touched the same spit, but soon got off, but she went ashore again on the opposite side, aud is now stuck there, waiting for the tide. New Plymouth, Tuesday.
