At a public meeting called' by the Mayor to consider the disposal of the surplus Indian famine relief refund, returned by Government, at which the ‘Mayor presided, about twelve persons were present. A resolution was adopted that the committee dispose of the money in the following way':—Auckland Dispensary, £IOO ; Ladies’ Benevolent Society, £IOO ; Industrial Home, £6O ; Orphan Home, at Parnell, £lO ; Orphan Home at Ponsonby, £lO. N*w Plymouth, Friday. The Hinernoa arrived about seven o’clock this morning with Sir George Grey and party. Arrangements were made to land at ten, and Messrs. Halse and King went off to the steamer. Ministers are now receiving deputations. They will go to Waitara, and will return in time for a banquet. On the Ministerial party returning from Waitara they were received by several deputations. At 4 o’clock Sir George Grey attended a banquet, at which over a hundred persons were present. Archdeacon Govett took the chair, in the absence of the Mayor, who was not present owing to recent domestic affliction. Sir G. Grey, in responding to the toast of “ Our Guests,” spoke very briefly hut in high terms of the place. Mr. Sheehan, in responding, said the keystone of the Native policy would be that they would suffer a great delay for the sake of peace, believing that in a tew years all danger of a native war would be at an end, and also that they would seek to benefit the Maori as well as the European. From what he had seen of the district that day, it would he the people’s own fault if the place was not a large one in a short space of time. Sir George Grey addresses a meeting tonight, and he will probably not leave here before to-morrow evening. Nominations for the Taranaki Jockey Club Handicap are to be sent in before 7 p.m. tomorrow. Christchurch, Friday. There was another trial between reaping and binding machines at Kaiapoi, the award of the prize this time being by ballot, each fanner present having a vote. The result was that McCormick’s machine was first, Woods’ second, and Osborne’s third. This reverses the decision of the judges at the Agricultural Society’s trial. There were some very sucoessfulexperimenfs with the telephone last night. Beath and Co. estimate their loss by the late fire at £6755 above insurance, which were £9060. It is expected that a fine block of stone buildings will be erected on the site of the fire. The returns submitted to the Board of Education show 120 elementary schools. In Canterbury there are 405 teachers, 15,513 scholars, comprising 8046 boys and 7468 girls. The average daily attendance is 10,736. J. J. Ollivier, who was recently dismissed from the appointment of auditor in a very summary manner, has been, reinstated, but it is unknown whether this will be permanent. At the Harbor Board to-day. there was a discussion on railway rates, which were denounced as in most cases very unfair, and it was resolved to communicate with the Government »n the matter. Timarb, Friday. Dr, Mclntyre, who made a post mortem, examination on the body of the infant child Margaret Wilson, cut his finger with his knife, and is now suffering from blood-poisoning. Last night Dr. Prinn came from Christchurch by special train to consult on the-case. Dr, Mclntyre is much better to-day. At the Resident ;Magistrate’s Court to-day Alexander Bruce Smith, a nmholder in' Mackenzie, country, charged with a breach of the Act in mustering and yarding sheep without giving notice to the neighboring; ruuholders, was fined £2 and costs.
