(PER PRESS AGENCT.I Alexandra, Monday. The: second meeting is fixed for March, and it was agreed, that Grey and should pay a private visit and stay with and go with him into the interior. At,Tawhiao’s request Sir George Grey said Tawhiao should have the privilege of sending letters and telegrams to the Premier franked. All the European party returned to Alexandra to-day, Sir George Grey riding overland, calling at iCaipatia and other places. After Sir George Grey’s departure, Wahanni, with 12-4 natives, arrived from Mokan, intending to attend a taugi and meeting in memory of Sir George Grey and Mr. Sheehan’s departure.. Visits between all sections of Hauhaus were exchanged, the meeting being considered strictly non-political, Rewi himself expressing that opinion.' The meeting in March will be fully discussed. Tile Premier and the Native Minister and 1 party on their arrival at Te Awamutu were , received with cheers. A large number of : <e ! -tlers presented an address, congratulating Sir George Grey, who replied. A deputation, consisting of the chairman of the Road Board (Mr. Sloane) and others, interviewed the Premier and other Ministers, inquiring if it was true that the railway was to be leased to private parlies, and if so they were of opinion’it would not be advantageous to the district. The Premier replied that he was not aware of any such arrangement being contemplated. Sir George Grey and party, having visited the missiou-house church, proceeded to Camhr dge. Auckland, Monday. Michael Costello, formerly provincial mssi senger, again attempted suicide by cutting his throat when under the influence of drink. The wound was not dangerous. The Star's special reporter at the King meeting telegraphs the following : —The scene at Kopua on Saturday night was unique in the annals of New Zealand history. The Ministers held a cabinet meeting on urgent matters, and besides this Tawhiao and hi> councillors discussed Maori matters. Great importance was attached by the natives to Bewl’s production of Potafcau’s seal, which has remained in Rewi s po- iessioa since Potatau’s death. On Sunday morning 'Tawhiao and Ngakau (his seer tary) visited Sir George Grey, who afterwards paid a farewell visit to the leading chiefs. Tawhiao appeared' iu "European attire, viz., a black coat, a white hat, a peacock’s feather, brown trousers (riding breeches), and a cavalry ammunition belt. The Premier left the camp at eleven, and rode t* Alexandra accompanied by Ngakau. The Kingites exhibited a strong desire to be reconciled to Government. , The strong opposition shown hvt session bySirGeoige Grey and Mr. Sheehan to the indiscriminate purchase of lauds lias popularised them with the natives. The Ngatitaus fully recognise their landless position through setting up the King. Many principal chiefs say the only reason for which they supported Sir George Grey was the threats of Europeanstoput him down. Tawhiao’sattihide with bowed head in the presence of Sir George Grev expressed readiness to submit himself. 'Most important matters transpired between Sir George Grey and Tawhiao. At a private interview the King, Rewi, and Te Ngakau applied for an advance of money. ■ No reference was made to the Waikato chiefs who expressed a desire to return to their old habits of cultivation and supplying Auckland market. They asked for farming implements, and also wished to send their children to 1 English schools. Sir George Grey, in response to an earnest request, promised to return during March, and also expressed his intention on that occasion to go from settlement to settlement. Rewi promised to erect a wooden building for the express accommodation of Ministers on. the next visit, and said he was ashamed to receive them in the raupo whare. Sir George Grey promised, conditionally, that all surveys beyond the confiscated boundary should be stopped; and he also promised to use his influence to obtain the pardon of all murderers, except Winiata. The latter requires confirmation. New Plymouth, Monday, Mrs. Standish, mother of the Mayor, was found dead in her bed this morning. Kumaba, Monday. An accident occurred this afternoon at Snob’s claim, Williamstown. A miner named Ritson was buried by a fall of earth from the face. l\Vhen taken out he was much bruised, but sustained no serious injury. The survey of the levels for the new Teremakau bridge commenced to-day. Christchurch, Monday. Tara Quam, a Chinaman, was brought up at the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, chai'ged with committing a rape on a girl ten years of age. He was remanded for three days. Nominations for the great Autumn and Steeplechase Handicaps close on Wednesday next. , r Dunedin, Mond&3 r . Father Heauebery and Charles Bright gave lectures last night to crowded houses. Hennebery, hinting at Bright, said there was a person lecturing that night, and telling people there was no moral obligation except to keep out of the ii on grasp of the law. He (Hennebery) wondered the devil did not run straight away to hell with such a man. He had no doubt the devil would and ought to have him. Crowds flocked to hear Henneberry. Timaed, Monday. It is understood that the telegram received from Government by the Timaru Harbor Board to-day is to the effect that the former cannot consent to the commencement of the mele in the harbor till the plans and specifications are drawn up and forwarded to the Royal Commission for approval. It is hoped the Harbor Board will get this done as soon ns possible.
