HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
The summer exhibition of the Wellington Horticultural Society was held on January 17 at the Odd Fellows’ Hall. The exhibition of fruit and vegetables was very good indeed, but as regards flowers was not equal to some previous shows. However, considering the heavy gale and rain lately experienced, this was not to be wondered at. There was a fair attendance of visitors, and in the evening some excellent musical selections were played by the band. His Excellency the Governor, who usually honors the society’s exhibitions with his presence, was unavoidably absent on official business. Amongst the exhibits which attracted a large share of attention were some very fine citrons, grown at the Kawau by Sir George Grey’s gardener ; ’some ripe hothouse grapes, shown by Mr, Wilkinson, and an immense cabbage weighing 15lbs. The mountain plants exhibited by Mr. Kirk. FJL.S., were much admired, and a large stand of ferns, contributed by Mr. Logan, adchd much to the appearance of the room. The exhibition on the whole may be pronounced a very successful affair. The following is the prize list : POT PLANTS—Gardeners. Specimen Plant, in Flower—lst, J. McNab.
