AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS AT CHRISTCHURCH.

CuitiscHUiiCH, Wednesday. The cricket match was resumed to-day. The weather was dull at first, but subsequently proved very fine. The ground was in good order, considering the recent heavy rains. The Australians took the field at 11.45. Fowler and W. Frith representing Canterbury at the wickets. Kendall bowled a maiden to the latter, and off Spofforth’s first over Fowler obtained two singles and Frith one. Kendall bowled a maiden to Fowler. Spofforth was .cut by Frith for a single, and hit by Fowler for 4. Kendall next clean bowled Frith. 113—11—2 Lee joined Fowler. The latter drove Spofforth for 2. Lee ran a bye. Kendall next disposed of Fowler, who was caught at the wickets by Blaokham. 116—12—8. Fuller came next on the list, and played the rest of the over without scoring. Lee cut Spofforth for 1, and Fuller hit to leg for 3. Kendall bowled a maiden to Fuller, who played one or two balls rather flukingly. Lee cut Spofforth for 4, and played the remainder of the over down. Kendall was sent to leg by Fuller for 3, and Lee slipped his last for a couple. Spofforth first sent Fuller to the rightabout, ho being clean bowled. 129 —13—6. Canterbury’s last hope, C. Frith, came to the wicket, and to save his injured hand batted left-handed off Spofforth. He fluked a single in the slips. Kendall bowled a maiden to Frith, who received it in one-haudod style. Lee out Spofforth for 3. Lee hit Kendall for 2. Then each bowler had a maiden. The second ball of Spofforth’s next over dismissed Frith, and the innings terminated for 135, Lee being not out with 12 to his credit, made in splendid style, without the ghost of a chauce. Time, 12.20. After selecting a fresh wicket, Canterbury, in high spirits at the great prospect of success, took the field, the two Bannermana going to the wickets. Ashby delivered a ball to A. Bannerraan, who sent his third for a couple. 0. Frith bowled from the other end. C. Baonerruan through bad fielding scored 1. A good stand was made. The two brothers by neat play slowly but surely increased the total. All the scoring was by singles and twos, except a pretty leg hit by A. Bannerraan for 3. Godby off leg mulled two balls. Ashby bowled a wide, being the first during the match. When the score reached 30, W. Frith relieved his brother, and soon after Fuller took the ball from Ashby. The latter chmge proved fatal to A. Baunermau, as the last ball of Ashby’s first over scattered his stumps. A. Bannerman played with great patience and in an excellent manner. 351 —11. So far there were only two maidens, Ashby one, W. Frith one. Horan filled the vacancy, but C. Bannerraan, after scoring 1 off Frith, and 2 off Fuller, was magnificently caught at the wicket by Fowler. Spofforth joined Horan, and both batting carefully made a good stand. When the score reached 50 Lee took the ball from W. Frith. The scoring was continued by singles and twos till 60 had been totalled, when Spofforth lost his leg stump to a shooter from Lee. 61 —3—lo. Gregory came next, and played iho rest of the over down. A maiden was scored to each bowler. Horan made a single and 2 off Lee, and Frith then; relieved Fuller, and commenced well, his first four overs being maidens. Lee however was knocked about for singles and an occasional 2. At 70 Ashby went on instead of Lee, and a single was scored off bis first over, then he gave a wide, and Frith three more maidens, making seven iu succession. Ashby bowled a maiden. Horau then cut Frith for 1, but off the last ball of the over Gregory was beautifully caught by Moore at point. 77— 4 —4. Murdoch joined Horan, who played a maiden from Ashby. Splendid batting uow took place, both men playing cautiously and in beautiful style. O. Frith,'-who was’ dead on, bowled seven maidens in succession, but the batsmen managed to score off Ashby, though’very slowly, nearly all singles and twos. The fielding was rather loose iu one or two instances, but generally speaking was good. When the score reached 92, Oorfe relieved Ashby. Horan cut Oorfe’s fourth ball for a single, and after Frith oad bowled another maiden Oorfe scored his first maiden. Horan slipped Frith neatly for 1, and porfe gave a wide. ’ Horan poked Oorfe for-aisingle, and then cut Frith for 3, bringing 100 up amid loud cheers. Oorfe bowled two maidens in succession, a couple of twos being

made off Frith. W. Frith relieved Corfe. Murdoch cut 0. Flith splendidly for 3, and then drove W. Frith hard for the same number, bringing 110 up. Neilson went on with slows, instead of 0. Frith ; but Murdoch obtained a couple of twos in his first over. Euns were also made freely off W. Fritb. At 121 C. Frith took the ball from his brother, and commenced with a maiden ; Fuller relieved iSleilson, and also opened with a maiden. Frith’s third ball was sent to the off by Horan for a single. Horan then cut Fuller for a similar number; but the next ball lowered Murdoch’s bails. 124—5—21. Blackham next appeared at the wickets. Frith bowled another maiden. Blackham sent Fuller to the off for a single, and then played a maiden from Frith. Fuller bowled two maidens in succession, and Frith another maiden.
