AUSTRALIAN- ELEVEN v. C A.NTERBURY FIFTEEN. A private telegram received in town on Saturday night from Christchurch gives thefollowing result of the first day’s play in the intercolonial match : Australia—First innings, 46. Canterbury—Ten wickets; down for 105. Ollivier scored 36 and Neilson 26. A practice match, for the purpose of choosing the team to represent Wellington in the forthcoming match against the. Australian Eleven, took place oh. the Basin Reserve on. ■ Saturday afternoon. The hien, twelve a side,, were chosen on the ground by Messrs. Armitage and J. A.' ‘ Salmon respectively. Thegame resulted in a victory for Mr. Salmon’s team by 26 runs. The match proved rather an uninteresting .one, neither side appearing to itself, especially in the field. The redeeming features of the game were the nicebatting of Horsyood, who contributed 29 tothe score of his side, and the splendid bowling of Armitage, who took, the whole of the opposing wickets for an average of about.2'rims, per wicket.
