The Cheque nor £2970. The following additional correspondence in reference to the above cheque has been furnished to us for publication ;—• “ Mayor’s Office, 1 Wellington, “14th January, 1878. “ Sib, —With reference to your letter of 12th inst., and to the cheque for £2970 enclosed in it, I beg to say that I cannot consent to be thedepository of the latter document, as requested in your letter, and therefore will return it to you, unless I am authorised to place it to the credit of the Corporation, . “ Your letter willl be placed before the committee at present engaged in investigating the circumstances under which the money was paid to Mr. Saunders.—l have, &c., “ J. TJranseield, Mayor. “Wm. Hutchison, Esq., Wellington.” “ Wellington, 15th January, 1878. “ Sin, —I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of yesterday’s date, in which you state that you will return the cheque I sent you for £2970 from Mr. Saunders, unless you are authorised at once to place it to the credit of the Corporation, In justice to all parties I must decline to give such an authorisation as you indicate, but I am desirous that you should continue to be the depository of the cheque, and if your d clination to retain it arises from any doubt of its sufficiency, should you wish it; I will get Mr. Saunders to have it marked by the'banker for any reasonable time —such time as the inquiry may be expected t» occupy. “ With reference to the last paragrapli of your letter, I can have no objection to your making what use of my letter you please ; but I may point out to : you that it was not addressed to the Investigation Committee, but to yourself as Mayor of the city.— l have, &c. t “William 1 Hutchison.”
