Mr. Sheehan is still suffering from a broken rib, which pre--vented him from carrying out his intention of proceeding to Tauranga, via Ohiuemuri Auckland, Thursday. Barr’s Globe Hotel, Wakefield-street, was brokenintoto-dayand £l2O stolen. The thieves have not yet been captured. Christchurch, Thursday. At a private meeting of capitalists yesterday, it was resolved to form a joint stock, company, with a capital of £IOO,OOO, in 20,000 shares of £5 each, to -construct a branch line of railway from South Rakaia, on the Great Southern railway, to Ashburton Forks, passing through a very fino agricul- , tural country. The land sales for the month realised £41,452. The City Council have decided to offer premiums of £IOO and £SO for the two beat schemes of water supply for Christchurch. The weather continues favorable for the. crops. Oamaru, Thursday. At a meeting of the committee of the North Otago Coursing Club to-day it was re- ' solved that' the first coursing meeting should , be held on May 21, and the second on June 18, and the Waterloo on July 15. A subcommittee was appointed to prepare a programme. The Municipal Council at a meeting tonight agreed to divide the amount voted last session, for widening Itchen and Tyne streets, between the leasehold and freehold proprietors in equal sums. An application is to be forthwith made to the Government to pay, over the £IOOO voted for the purpose. Dunedin, Thursday. There are thirteen criminal cases set down for hearing at the Supreme Court on Monday next, forgery and larceny being the principal crimes.. Eight thousand persons visited the Caledonian sports yesterday. Five thousand travelled by rail. In Cameron’s sweep on the Melbourne Champion Race the winners were all Dunedin men. The Hon. Mr. Reynolds will address hi»constituents at Port Chalmers early next week. Mr. W. A. Young is about to stock Shag River with a portion of the consignment of American salmon lately received by the Christchurch Acclimatisation Society. Gbeymouth, Thursday. The Customs receipts for 1877 are £41,116 lls, being an increase of £1869 13s. on the previous year. The gold exported during 1877 was 80,2300 z., value £820,920, showing an increase on the previous year of 11,3100 z., value £45,240. Mr. Woolcock addressed his constituents in the Town Hall last night. There was a small attendance. He received a vote of confidence. Hokitika, Thursday. The Union Bank shipped 31670 z. gold by the steamer Alhambra. The first prize in Evans and Harrison’s sweep on the Champion Stakes was won by a miner named Gidden, at Kumara ; the second prize was won by Learmonth and Co., of Hokitika ; and the third by Marks and Grover, of Hokitika.
