The following Reuter's message confirms the Argus special :—The Russian G o vernment, replying to an intimation from England that the Porte was prepared for peace negotiations, declared if the Porte desires an armistice that it is necessary to treat direct with the Russian Commander-in Chief. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, Friday. It is the general opinion that war between England and Russia is imminent. Colonel Anderson, commander of the land forces, and Captain Manderville, of the Cerberus, were consulted at a Cabinet meeting as to the defences of the colony.! Both officers are to report immediately. Hugh George was presented with a silver service by the employes of the Argus on his severing his connection with that paper to occupy a position on the Sydney Morning Herald, Mr. George has been connected with the Argus for the last twenty years. Sydney, Thursday. Dr. Somerville has completed his tour of New South Wales, and left for New Zealand to-day. Mr. Fitzpatrick, the Colonial Secretary, has been re-elected.
