CALEDONIAN SOCIETY SPORTS.

The competitors have nearly all accepted, and as the weather promises to be fine, and the track is improved in condition by the late rain, fast travelling may be expected. The society have been rather unlucky of late years, the weather generally threatening. Last year the sports were on the eve of postponement, when at twelve it cleared up, and the meeting proved the most successful ever held. 'l'he entries for the shorter distances are much more numerous than for the longer distances, there being very few long-distance runners iu Wellington. On this account the society have done away with the mile race this year. I propose giving after the sports are over a few comments on the performances, &c., of the various runners. I think the most likely winners on Tuesday will turn up in M :i jor. Woods, and Webb. Major has been let iu rather lightly, although an runner, and if in as good condition as on Boxing Day will score one or two wins. Putting the events in order—For the 100yds I would place Major, 1 ; Webb, 2 ; for the 220yds, Major, 1 ; Blythe, 2. For the 440yds I imagine there will some very fast going. Chuck has rather a long start, and will .make the pace very merry. Major, who has wonderfully improved in his running of the quartor-mile, will I think prove the winner of it, with Webber, Woods, and Blythe very close. The Hurdle Race will be between Webber and Woods, unless Aitkeu prove better over hurdles than is expected. With his twenty yards start Woods will make Webber travel. Th* Half-mile Race should prove a good oue. Major will tax Webber’s staying powers to their utmost, as he will just have finished the Hurdle Pvace with Woods. Moran, unless improved from Boxing Day, will not be in the race. Lacey, a new man, has a good start, and considering that he is not known, has been let in rather easy, and if any good, should get placed. Fur the Two-mile Walking, I suppose Hodge deemed the start given to° much, and has not accepted. Moran will, I think, prove the winner. Nunquam Dormio.
