MR. PILMER AND THE CORPORATION.
Mr. Pilmer lias addressed the following letter to the Mayor and Corporation:— ‘‘Wellington, December 20, 1877.
“ Gentlemen,—l beg most respectfully to
express my regret that the management of ray duties meets with your disapproval. I have always done mv best for the benefit of the city, my work is most difficult to be carried on without displeasing some one, and it has had to be done both by night and day. “ I do not wish it to be supposed that I make any abject appeal for the retention of office, but I certainly feel the affront of dismissal. “ I may have shortcomings, but in the spirit of British fairplay I should have had notice of them, or some specific charge should have been made, that I might rebut it if untrue, or otherwise correct the default.
“If you decide that I shall leave your service, I shall ask to record my thanks to the former Councils for their kindness and considerat on to me in the performance of a very difficult duty, and at the sane time to express a hope that my place will be filled by a better man.— I have, &c., “A. A. G. Pilmer. “To the Mayor and Councillors.”
