He has gone to the Kawau tonight, and will return to Auckland on the 27th. The Hinemoa goes via Cape Van Dieinan with lighthouse stores. ' ’ ' To-day Mr. Rowe, with some of his supporters, waited on Sir G. Grey, and formally gave in his allegiance to the Grey party. The following players have been selected to represent Auckland in the cricket match against the Canterbury team; —Messrs. K. J. Yates, W. W. Robinson, D. Lynch, AY. P. Biickland, H. Colson, J. Mmnford, IT. Hufaur, Grierson, 11, E. Colton, Glecson, and AY. L. Rees.
. At the inquest on Isabella Eraser, found drowned at Ponsonby, a verdict of “ Pound drowned” was returned by the jury.
During the reception proceedings yesterday a boy named Cullen fell from the main rigging of the ship Fameuoth, a distance of 20ft., but was not seriously injured. At the City Council to-day a long discussion took place on a motion to reduce the water rate from 4d. to 2d. The matter was referred to a committee. The Mayor’s salary was fixed at £l5O.

The natives here are very indignant against the Government for the old Act, prohibiting the selling of liquor to natives, being brought into operation. They object to having their beer stopped. Tawhaio will have a feast and races on Christmas Day at Kopua. New Plymouth, Thursday. \ esterday, Standish was installed into the office of Mayor for the third time. The Borough Council decided to ask the burgesses to agree to a £25,000 loan for waterworks, gas, and town improvements. Nelson, Thursday.
The Rev. Charles Clark, after delivering three lectures to crowded audiences, sailed for Wellington this evening. Hokitika, Thursday.
Out of twenty-four plans for the river protective works submitted by the Hokitika Ha'bor Board to the the Engitxeer-in-Chief, Wellington, the one recommended by the Engineer and adopted by the Board was designed by Mr. James Park, of Hokitika, a young man employed in saw mills, who receives a bonus of £250. Many fisst-class engineers competed.
Christchurch, Thursday.
At half-past 3 o’clock this morning between 500 and 600 men, collected from various railway lines here and in Otago, commenced the work of converting the line between Christchurch and Amberley from broad to narrow gauge. The line is expected to be finished this evening, so that the traffic will ouly be stopped one day. The line is about thirty-five miles in length. At a meeting of the Jockey Club held last eight, the disqualification of Matthews for alleged unfair riding of Bribery for the Raih way Plate at last Metropolitan meeting, was removed, on the ground that, although Paxtheuopoeus did not go inside the post, the stewards, after further inquiry, were of opinion that Matthews really thought Parthenopoeus had done so, and for that reason did not ride Bribery out, but preferred to enter a protest. The Jockey Club, however, passed a resolution that in eases of this kind jeckeys should always ride their horses out instead of trusting to a protest. A youth, calling himself the New Zealand Blondin, purposes performing on a rope 50ft. high at the Oxford sports on New Year’s Day. He has given several private performances with great success. He purposes travelling through the colony after his Oxford appearance. Dunedin, Thursday. The Walton Coal Company held its annual meeting to-day. The result of the year's work is a profit of £666. £IOOO is set apart for a dividend at the rate of 20 per cent.
