THE PROPOSED CITY DRAINAGE.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —In reference to the proposed drainage scheme, and in answer to Mr. Bell's objections, I would say make a strong clay dam about 60ft. high in Polhill Gully, to hold a great reserve of water, to flood the drains when required (and give an abundant supply of water for other purposes), make a deep shaft, and the lower end of the drains for the sewage to tall into. Do not make a pump to pump it up, make a machine to lift it np, the same as is used to raise the mud in the rivers in London and Glasgow—if it should rain cats and dogs it would not choke that machine. It the one machine or any number of machines should get out of order, have a drain ready near the top of the shaft to conduct sewage into the harbor for a few hours while the machine v/a.s repaired. The size of the pipes through the city is of no consequence as long as they are large enough.—l am, &e., James Huxley. Manners-street, Wellington, Nov. 7.
