Christchurch, Thursday. There was glorious weather on this the third day of the Metropolitan Meeting. There was a very large attendance, much better than on the third day of any previous year. The racing was moderately good. The Publicans’ Steeplechase Handicap was an easy win for Banjo. There was a cannon between Royalty and Shillelagh. This was doubly unfortunate, as the former, who had been freely backed, showed by his running after the fall that he would have stood a good chance of winning. Osborne, the rider of Shilelagh, had the misfortune to break his collarbone. There was great disappointment at the small number of starters for the Christchurch Plate, nine out of twelve being scratched. Trump Card was made a hot favorite, the bookmakers offering 6 to 4 on him. The Card justified this confidence by winning very comfortably, and though ridden a little at the bottom of the straight, he was never hard pressed, The Metropolitan Handicap was a great surprise, Templeton scarcely being quoted in the betting. publicans’ steeplechase handicap Of 75 sovs, with a sweepstakes of 25 sovs each. Royalty was first on his feet, but the other horses by that time were 40 or 50 lengths ahead. On rounding the top of the course Banjo went to the front, and rapidly increased the lead until the race soon appeared, bar accident, all over. Royalty made up lost ground very fast, but was too far astern to have a chance. Wanganui, Thursday. The Wanganui Spring Meeting came off to-day successfully, the weather being beautiful, the attendance large, and the racial first-class. The course was in fine order, the turf being elastic and perfectly level, owing to the judicious expenditure upon it during the winter. About 1500 visitors were on the ground, including some from Wellington. The Produce brought out a field of seveu horses, and a better lot of maidens seldom came to any post m tbe colony. Many of them were by Raveuswood and Traducer, with strains of Sir Hercules and other firstclass racing-blood in their veins. Sky blue, a nice looking Day Dawn filly, half-sister to Trueblue, was made a hot favorite, but she was kept too far in the rear, and could not do the needful when called on, the winner turning up in Day Dawn’s handsome daughter Legacy, from Fortuna, bred by Major Morse. The Hurdle Race was the race of the day, as the five starters for it had all previously distinguished themselves over timber. Te Whetumarama, who was installed first favorite, was a fine star, and, with Mr.. Campion up, carried a lot of money ; Gazelle, with Mr. Nicholson on, also had his friends, as had Greyhound, the winner of last year’s Maiden Steeplechase; Bully-for-you was fancied by a few and repaid their confidence, as he won by a short head, owing to the splendid riding of Kraft, between whom and D. Campion, on Te Whetu, a grand struggle for victory took place up thestraight. The Hack Hurdles ended in a dead heat between Forest King and Juanna. In the run-off the King had it all his own way. The Wanagnui Stakes brought ten to the post. Opawa and May Moon were equal favorites. Commission bolted in his prelimiuary canter, and did three miles before he could be stopped, as his boy was too weak to hold him. Had he not thrown away his chance he would have been in it, as he ran a game horse, and finished fourth, having done five miles. Opawa pulled it off nicely, with May Moon well up, and also won the Town Plate. The Consolation Stakes were won by May Moon, after a splendid struggle with Flora McDonald. Everything passed off harmoniously, there being no disputes, and every race being fought out to the post. The close finishes in the handicaps were a proof of Mr. Hately’s fitness tor his office. Subjoined is the result of the different events. PRODUCE STAKES Of £SO. open to all horses that have never run for money previous to the time of entry. 11 miles. Entrance, 3 guineas, "Weight for age. Pawa and May Moon then came up, and after a game struggle passed Maid, who stuck to them up the straight, the three finishing close together. Commission, who had bolted in his preliminary canter, and gone three times round the course, finished fourth.
