THE MELBOURNE CUP.

The following are the final payments for this great handicap race, which is decided today : THE MELBOURNE CUP, A handicap sweepstakes, of 20 sovs. each, with 500 added ; the second horse 50 sovs., and the third

“ Voltigeur ” sends us the following : “ Time appears only to increase the interest taken. in the greatest of all Australian races by the sporting public. To-day will be decided the Melbourne Cup, which closed with

the large number of 116 nominations, 84 acceptances, and 45 final payments. Commencing the latter with the top weight. The Diver, I recognise in this strapping son of Maribyrnong and Gwendoline a horse worthy of Mr. Barnard’s impost of 9st. 21b. Good though he be, I hardly think his long spell will enable him to land the money. Pride of the Hills is a horse of a similar class ; but I’m afraid he too will not be able to concede so much weight successfully to others lower on the list. I think Wollomai did rather better than he will ever do again when he caught the judge’s eye for the Cup in 1875, with 7st. 81b., in 3min. 38sec. Robinson Crusoe is held safe by Newminster, to whom he gives 71b.. Imperial is a good one, but rather overworked. Adelaide, Aldinga, and The Painter are held safe by horses giving them weight. Kingfisher and Janitor are both rather dangerous; and Haricot, if in form, exceedingly so. Volo I do not fancy, and the same of Irish Stew. Were I certain Tom Kirk was good at the distance, I should be inclined to plump. for this halfbrother of Haricot and Newminster. Coquette is hardly good enough. The King I cannot have at all, nor Filibuster. Fisherman and Meteor are not brilliant. Of Chester, nothing here written can recommend him, as, he has in my opinion proved himself the best three-year-old of the season. Artful Joe is a horse that has been backed very heavily lately by the followers of the Wilson stable, and is by some fancied a 'second Don Juan. Neither Lockleys nor Waterford have a show with some other three-year-olds ; and I hardly think Glengarry is a good two-mile horse. The Vagabond must have improved on hi-; last year’s form; and by his running in the Hdtham Handicap on Saturday proves that he is to be watched. Ralph Leigh, Peerless, Royalty, Rapidity, Lord Harry, Nightingale, Salisbury, Device, and Waxy, have not done anything to commend them as Cup winners. Savanaka and Pluto, are both first-class horses. Devilshoof I pass; Glenormiston’s win on Saturday is no criterion; Idalia is yet a maiden. Woodlands, one of the best in the race; Hipponia, Hotspur, nor Explosion do I fancy. As the result of a short review, I fancy Amendment, Chester, Vagabond, Woodlands, Tom Kirk, Artful Joe, and Savanaka; and although the knowing ones imagine they have ‘found out something ’ I think an Amendment will be successfully moved, with the others somewhat in the order named.”
