Napier, Monday. _ Richard Winter, solicitor’s clerk, was this afternoon committed for trial on the charge of forging a cheque for .£3, He was clerk to Mr. Lee, and it was that gentleman’s name he forged. The prisoner is the same person who some months ago was charged by a man named ’ Sohultze with robbing him of £4O in bank notes while Schultze was drunk. The charge was not proceeded with, and Winter brought an action against Schultze for malicious prosecution, but lost it. Taupo, Monday. A large native meeting is being held at Paeroa (Arawa country) with the object of coming to a decision as to the lease of lands in this district. Thev Armed Constabulary, under Major Roberts, are busy making a road to the Hot Springs, repairing the redoubt, and putting their quarters in order. Mr. Turner, the District Surveyor, accompanied by Mr. 0. 0. Davies, visited the Ngatu and other tribes in connection with the required surveys here, and matters have been satisfactorily arranged. Taupo township is to be immediately surveyed for building purposes. Christchurch, Monday. Heavy rain fell on Saturday night and extinguished the bush fire at Oxford. Four cottages and a large area of bush have been destroyed. The conflagration was caused by two men lighting a fire to boil their billy. On Saturday, Captain Harding, formerly of the 58th Regiment, died suddenly. The body of a man named McG-afferty, who had been missing three weeks, has been found near Mount Harding, and the body of a woman named Ellen Boyle, a great drunkard, has been found in the River Avon. Trump Card is still a hot favorite tor the Derby, and Mata for the Cup and Handicap. A very heavy north-west gale was experienced here yesterday. The north-west winds during the past fewdays have caused heavy floods in the Waimakiriri River, which overflowed between Christchurch and Kaiapoi, damaging the railway line and stopping communication. Timaru, Monday. The weather continues boisterous, northwesters prevailing. There was a heavy downpour of rain during last night. It is very welcome to the farmers, whose crops want water. The Primitive Methodist Bazaar closed last night at Jonas and Hart's repository, the total takings having amounted to £3OO. Lawrence, Monday. Mr. Bastings, M.H.R., lost his youngest daughter from scarlet fever yesterday. This makes ten deaths from scarlet fever in a very short time. - There are still a large number of cases under treatment. Dunedin, Monday. It is stated that a change’of venue will be asked for in Proudfoot’s case. Young Gately, convicted of rape at the recent sitting of the Supreme Court, received his second instalment of twenty-five lashes this morning. Blenheim, Monday, The water suddenly fell last night, and the town is clear of flood this morning. A piece at the north end of the bridge is acting as a breakwater, and throwing the current on the south bank, which is in great danger. There is a very high flood in Awatere. A meeting of the Borough Council will be held this afternoon. The Council met, and decided to send the Mayor to Wellington, to put a temporary ferry for passengers, and to chop down the piece of wreck at the north end of the bridge at once. It is feared that it is too late, as if the south bank gives way first, immense damage will ensue. (FROM A CORRESPONDENT.) Carterton, Monday. The meeting held to-night re the formation of a new municipality was packed with outsiders.- No resolutions were passed.
