Napier, Monday. _ Richard Winter, solicitor’s clerk, was this afternoon committed for trial on the charge of forging a cheque for .£3, He was clerk to Mr. Lee, and it was that gentleman’s name he forged. The prisoner is the same person who some months ago was charged by a man named ’ Sohultze with robbing him of £4O in bank notes while Schultze was drunk. The charge was not proceeded with, and Winter brought an action against Schultze for malicious prosecution, but lost it. Taupo, Monday. A large native meeting is being held at Paeroa (Arawa country) with the object of coming to a decision as to the lease of lands in this district. Thev Armed Constabulary, under Major Roberts, are busy making a road to the Hot Springs, repairing the redoubt, and putting their quarters in order. Mr. Turner, the District Surveyor, accompanied by Mr. 0. 0. Davies, visited the Ngatu and other tribes in connection with the required surveys here, and matters have been satisfactorily arranged. Mr. Bastings, M.H.R., lost his youngest daughter from scarlet fever yesterday. This makes ten deaths from scarlet fever in a very short time. - There are still a large number of cases under treatment. Dunedin, Monday. It is stated that a change’of venue will be asked for in Proudfoot’s case. Young Gately, convicted of rape at the recent sitting of the Supreme Court, received his second instalment of twenty-five lashes this morning. Blenheim, Monday, The water suddenly fell last night, and the town is clear of flood this morning. A piece at the north end of the bridge is acting as a breakwater, and throwing the current on the south bank, which is in great danger. There is a very high flood in Awatere. A meeting of the Borough Council will be held this afternoon. The Council met, and decided to send the Mayor to Wellington, to put a temporary ferry for passengers, and to chop down the piece of wreck at the north end of the bridge at once. It is feared that it is too late, as if the south bank gives way first, immense damage will ensue. (FROM A CORRESPONDENT.) Carterton, Monday. The meeting held to-night re the formation of a new municipality was packed with outsiders.- No resolutions were passed.
