(per press agency.) Auckland, Friday. Henry S. Meyers has been arrested on the charge of not fully and truly disclosing his estate to the trustee in bankruptcy. Alexandra, Friday. Tawhiao has called a meeting for the 20th instant, in anticipation of receiving a visit from Sir George Grey, to arrange matters. Large quantities of produce are being brought down from Kuiti. Napier, Friday. The prospectus of the Hawke's Bay Fire Insurance Company was issued to-day. Its capital i 3 to be £IOO,OOO, in 20,000 sha_re3 of £5 each, £1 only to be called up, in six instalments, of which only ss. is to be paid on application, and ss. on allotment. The remaining 10s. is to be paid in four further call 3 of 2s. 6d. each at intervals of three months. The provisional dhectory includes the Hon. H. R. Russell, Captain Russell, M.H.R., the Hon. J. D. Ormond, M.H.R:, F. Sutton, M.H.R., and a number of other local and influential persons. The Rev. Charles Clark had a crammed house last night, and left this morniDg by the Taupo. Altogether he has been highly successful here, and has made himself so popular that the people would be glad if he could pay them another visit, of which there is some likelihood. The collections for the Famine Relief ii und have reached close upon £BOO, and it i 3 expected £IOOO will be made up. TiMARU, Friday.
The annual meeting of the boating club was held last night. It was decided to open the boating season on the 10th inst. by a procession of boats. Three new boats are to be added to the fleet during the year. Great interest is taken in the club. The Primitive Methodist Bazaar is still open. On the show day £llO was taken.' It will conclude to-night. A large sum will be added to the trust fund. Messrs. Jonas and Hart held a sale of stock en the show grounds, when large prices were obtained for about fifty horses and sixty head of cattle. ■''•,,. , , District Judge Ward yesterday disposed of a long list of civil and bankruptcy cases. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Hall are having a very successful season at the Theatre Koyal. Dunedin, Friday. Mr. Leary, ex-Mayor, addressed a largelyattended meeting last night, and explained fully his reasons for resigning the pasition of Mayor. The meeting was rather noisy, and ended without any resolution being put as to the candidates fitness for office. The total amount received here up to the present date for the Indian Famine Kelief , Fund is £1795 7s 6d. I The Opera Company arrived yesterday morning, and will open at the Princess Theatre tomorrow night in "II Trovatore." Proudfoot's case is still on, but will probably be concluded to-night, should the jury agree. Smith, speaking for the defence, charged the Crown Prosecutor with _ overeagerness to obtain a conviction. This was indignantly denied by Dennistoa, who disclaimed any other feeling in the matter than arose from a desire to promote the ends of justice. In his speech, which was a very able one, he again commented in severe language on the action of Murphy, whose conduct he characterised as Bhameftl and disgraceful, and said that his offering the father of the prosecutrix a bribe was only part of the dirty work he'had been hired to do. At a meeting of the Board of Education, a letter was read from Father Binstcad, giving the names of six Catholic children who he said had been caned by the master of Loburn school for not doing Bible lessons. In some cases this is said to have been done after the parents had given notice to their children nit to take part in the lessons. The Board ordered a full inquiry into the matter. The name of Telltalo was accidentally omitted from the list of acceptors for the Free Handicap. Chancellor did not accept. Oamabu, Friday. The annual show of the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association will be held here on Thursday and Friday the 15th and 16th, and promises to bo a great success. Already 945 entries have been received, against 727 last year. It is expected that the entries will reach 1000. The amount collected hero up to the predPnt time in aid of the Indian Famine Kelief Fund is £432.
