(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Thursday. The Governor has refused permission to use Government House and grounds for. the fete in aid of the Indian Famine Fund, the decision being notified to the committee by the Colonial Secretary. The fete was adjourned. The subscriptions to the Indian Famine Relief Fund now amount to £756, and are yet coming in. New Plymouth, Thursday. Bishop Redwood and Father Henuehery came through by the Mountain road to Inglewood, where they stayed yesterday, aud came into town early this morning. Owing, to bad roads they were greatly fatigued. The Mission services commence this evening. Wanganui, Thursday. A fire was discovered in the upper floor of a store "occupied by Mr. Levy as an auction mart. The fire was first seen in the partition between the New Zealand Insurance Office and Levy’s store. A splendid force of water was on, and the brigade working well, all danger was averted in a short time. Had there not been a good supply of water nothing could have saved the whole block—an important business one. Levy aud his storeman, Tuffnell, were afterwards arrested on suspicion, brought up before the Resident Magistrate this morning, and remanded till next Monday. Heavy bail was enforced. The insurances on the building are £2OO in the Standard, £2OO in the Norwich, £l5O in the Victoria, and £2OO in the Imperial. On the stock. £250 in the London and Lancashire, and £2OO in the Imperial. The privileges for the Spring Race Meeting were sold for £2OO. The total receipts in aid of the Indian Famine Relief Fund amount to £530. The list is now closed. Timaru, Thursday. Judge Ward presided at the civil sittings of the District Court to-day for the first time since his illness. At the show dinner at the Grosvcnor Hotel the secretary announced the following as the successful competitors for the cups, &c.:— For merinos, a cup value £25 and a gold medal, the best ram, Canterbury and Otago Association. For English Leicesters, a cup value £ls, Mr. Postlethwaite. For Border Leicesters, a cup value £ls, Gillies and Street, For Romney Marsh, a cup value £lO, Ford and Co., Christchurch. For Lincolns, a cup value £2O, Canterbury and Otago Association. For Cots wolds, a cup value £lO 10s., W. K. McDonald. A gold medal for the best longwoolled ram, H. J. Hall. For cattle, a cup value £2O, Fleming and Hedley. A gold medal for the best bull, P. H. Russell. For draught horses, a cup value £2O, E. Menlove. For the best draught entire horse, a cup value £lO 10s., B. Ruddock. A gold medal value £6 10s. for the best draught mare, Mr. Menlove. A-gold medal value £6 10s., for the best thoroughbred horse, P. Archer. A gold medal for the best wheat, Mr. Guseott. The dinner was largely attended. Mr. Archer waa in the chair. Christchurch, Thursday. The Indian Famine Relief Fund has now reached £3OOO, and subscriptions are still coming in. . - Rain fell in several of the country districts on Tuesday, doing the crops a great deal of good. In the majority of the districts the crops

are still suffering for want of rain. Parching north-west winds hare been unusually prevalent. Dunedin, Thursday. The vital statistics for the month of October are—Births, 168 ; deaths, 47 ; marriages, 33. Count De Zaba delivered a very instructive lecture last night on the best method of studying universal history and literature. At a meeting of the Harbor Board to-day it was stated that there are now 18ft. of water on the bar at low water. The charge against George Proudfoot was continued to-day, and with the exception of the testimony of Dr. Hocken the whole of the evidence was concluded, when the Court adjourned till next day.
