BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The Board met at 11 o’clock yesterday morning-. Present:—Mr. Pharazyn (chairman), and Messrs. Watt, Toomath, and Beetham. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Secbctabt stated that he had received letters from the Eev. Mr. Boss and Mr. Fleetwood, asking for leave of absence. It was stated that if leave was not granted these gentlemen would forfeit their seats. On the motion of Mr. Toomath, leave was granted. A return was prepared by the Secretary and laid before the Board with regard to the arrears in school fees. The return showed that the amount of arrears during the past three years amounted to £494, being only six per cent, on the total amount of the fees. The Secketakt drew the attention of the Board to two large schools recently erected not being-insured. The schools had cost £SOOO. It was decided to take steps to have the schools insured. The Chairman of the Kaiwarra Local School Committee wrote to the Board, asking that an allowance of £2O should be made to Mr. Hurley for rent. Mr. Toomath opposed any allowance being made, on the ground that Mr. Hurley had taken a house other than that provided in connection with the ‘school, without first acquainting the Board. He opposed the granting of the request, as a matter of principle. He also believed that the building attached to the school was a suitable residence. Mr. Watt said that from the letter of the chairman of the Local Committee it appeared there was a strong feeling amongst the members of the committee on the subject. Mr. Toomath said it was not their own money they were dealing with. However he would earn promise the matter by allowing Mr. Harley £lO. This was agreed to. In considering the items for extras to the Tory-atreet infant school, Mr. Toomath drew attention to the fact that there was not sufficient school accommodation in Wellington. Numbers of children were refused admission, and every school in the city was crowded. The Secbetabt read a letter from the Education Department requesting the Board not to enter into any fresh engagements or alterations to any existing buildings without receiving the sanction of the department. An application was received from the Johnson ville School Committee asking that the sum of £22 be expended upon repairing the ■cbool. Mr. Toomath said the school had only been erected two years, and if the committee were careless enough to take it over without seeing that the building was properly erected, they should be made to take the responsibility. •The Board decided not to vote the amount asked for, and referred the matter back to the committee. ■The following were the successful tenderers for the leases for twenty-one years of the various educational reserves undermentioned : Suburban section 310, Palmerston, 10 acres, James Perrin, £lO 10s. per annum.
