PETITION TO THE GOVERNOR.
The following is a copy of a petition drawn up last evening, and already numerously signed, which will be presented to Hia Excellency the Governor to-day ; To His Excellency the Most Honorable the Marquis of Normanby, G.C.M.G., &c., Governor of New Zealand, &c.—The petition of the undersigned inhabitants of Wellington, in the colony of New Zealand, humbly showeth, — 1. That one James Mackay was, on the 17th day of October, convicted of assaulting Thomas William Hislop, Esq., a member of the House of Representatives, and was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment for the said offence. Your petitioners would draw your Excellency’s attention to the following facts: —(l) That the said James Mackay was in the service of the Grown from February, 1858, until July, 1869, during which period he distinguished himself on many occasions, and on quitting the employment of the Government received a most flattering letter acknowledging his numerous services ; (2) that the said James Mackay, in the year 1873, at a time of great peril to the colony, acted as Agent for the Government at Waikato, where, after distinguished services, he received a valuable testimonial for courageous performance of his duty ; (3) that the said James Mackay has been a justice of the peace for the colony for the last twenty-one years ; (1) that your petitioners believe that the said James Mackay committed the assault of which he has been convicted under the provocation occasioned by certain unfounded statements injuriously affecting his public and private character. 2. That your petitioners believe that the punishment already undergone by the said James Mackay is amply sufficient to meet the ends of justice and to vindicate the law. 3. That your petitioners therefore humbly pray that your Excellency may be pleased to order the release of the said James Mackay from further custody.—And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray, &c.
