OUR WATER SUPPLY.
TO THE EDITOE OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —Your report of the Town Council's proceedings makes it appear that Mr„ Marchant stated that the new reservoir would contain one hundred thousand gallons of water. What Mr. Marchant said was that the carrying capacity of the reservoir would be one hundred million gallons of water, but the quantity intended to be impounded at first would be eighty of gallons. This, at the estimated consumption of a million gallons a day, would give about ten weeks' supply. When we look at the wonderfully rapid progress of Wellington, rising in about a dozen of years from a population of five thousand to close upon twenty thousand, it seems only prudent to look about for a further a further water supply. My impressionisthatbydamraingtheKorakorastream, and leading the pipes along the railway could easily secure a never-failing plentiful supply of water, purer than that we now use. It would be wise that the city should promptly secure a pre-emptive right to do this in the future, so as to avoid those wretched riparian law suits which sometimes arise. Possibly going up the Hutt River, say twenty miles, would secure a good supply, but "there is no question but that the subject deserves earnest consideration immediately.—l am, &c, J. A. A.
