SEVENTH SYNOD OE THE DIOCESE OF WELLINGTON.

Thursday, October 11

The proceedings opened by the President with the prayer of the standing committee. The Lay Secretary informed the_ Synod that the late Mr. Moore had left in his will a sum of £SOO to the Diocesan Fund. Minutes of the former day’s proceedings were read and confirmed. The Rural Dean read the report of committee on parishes and parochial districts, and gave notice that he would move that the report should be adopted and printed in the report of the Synod, The debate on the election of standing committee by ballot was resumed. The amendment that the standing committee should be elected by ballot was put to the Synod and lost. The original motion for the election of the standing committee was again put to the Synod, with the addition of the names to the proposed list of Rev. B. Coffey, Mr. B. Marten, Hon. C. J. Pharazyn, and Mr. Beetham. The motion as amended was then put and carried. Moved by Mr. Bowles, and seconded by Archdeacon Stock, —That the balance-sheet of the Diocesan Fund, and the list of subscribers be printed in the report of the Synod. —Carried. Moved by Mr. BaNNAtyne, and seconded by Rev. B. W. Harvey,— That this Synod desires to record its thankful appreciation of the late Mr. George Moore’s generosity in bequeathing £SOO to the Diocesan Fund, and at the same time to convey the expression of its deep sympathy with Mrs. Moore in her bereavement. They thankfully also acknowledge the many services of Mr. Moore to the diocese as member of the Archdeaconry Board and of the Diocesan Synod.—Carried. Moved by Mr. Bannatynb, and seconded by the Lay Secretary, —That the report of the Cemetery Fund and balance-sheet be printed in the report of the Synod.—Carried. Moved by Archdeacon Stock, and seconded by the Lay Secretary,— That tho report of the standing committee, and balance-sheets of the Pension Fund, Pension Fund capital account, and Endowment Fund, and the report and balance-sheet of the Melanesian Mission be printed in the report of the Synod,— Carried.

The Ven. Archdeacon Stock moved, and the Kev. B, W. Harvey seconded, —That the list of assessors appointed by the Bishop be concurred in by the Synod. The list is as follows:—Ven. Archdeacon Stock, Kev. B. W. Harvey, Kev. T. Pancourt, Rev. K. Coffey, Kev. T. L. Tudor, Kev. A. Knell, Messrs. H. Clarke, G. Didsbury, B. Hunter, A. W. I’’. Halcombe, C, P. Powles, and W. H. Quick. The Ven. Archdeacon Stock asked the President, —Under what circumstances Mr. Gaby, who had conducted divine service at the Lunatic Asylum for four years, had been superseded by the officer in charge of the Asylum ?

The President read the following reply: — “ In answer to the question asked by theVen. Archdeacon Stock, X am unable to say by whose authority Mr. Herbert Gaby, who, at the urgent request of the late Mr. Seager, and authorised by me, has during the last four years conducted Divine Service at the Asylum, has been supeerseded, or rather told to discontinue the Sunday services. I have taken steps to ascertain by whose authority this was done.”

Colonel Gorton asked the President, —If clause 3 of No. 4 Act—to provide for the regulation of parishes, &c.—debars a parish meeting being called for purposes other than the electing of parish officers ? The President read the following reply : “ In answer to the question now asked by Colonel Gorton, I beg leave to_ say that it is no part of my duty as President of the Diocesan Synod to give an authoritative interpretation to auy act of the Synod, but will venture to say that iu ray opinion, there is nothing in clause 3 of Act 4 to debar a parish meeting from being called for purposes other than that of electing parish officers.” The Rev. J. A Newth moved, and Mr. Marten seconded, —That No. 6 of schedule A be altered as follows :—Omit words “ in parish or district, and families professing to belong to the Church:” insert instead, “total number of families in parish or district ; number of families professing to belong to the Church ; number of families in the habit <£ availing .themselves of the services of the Church.”— Lost.

Mr. Beetham moved, and Mr. Marten seconded,—That the thanks of this Synod be given to Mrs. Hadfield, and those ladies who have acted with her, for their successful exertions in supplementing the Diocesan Fund; and this Synod expresses a wish that the ladies iu the country districts be asked to assist in the same laudable object.—Carried. The Rev. J. F. Teakle moved, and the Rev. J. McWilliam seconded, —That no sittings in any Church of the diocese shall be let or appropriated after June 30, 1878.—Lost. Notices of motion were given by Archdeacon Stock, Mr. Didsbury, and the Rev. T. Fancourt.

Mr. Powles obtained leave to suspend standing order No. 11, to move as follows ; —Moved by Mr. Powles, and seconded hy Archdeacon Stock, —That a committee be appointed to examine into and report upon the trust lauds belonging to the diocese, such committee to consist of the Rev. B. W. Harvey, Rev. T. Faucourt, Messrs. Haloombo, Didsbury, C. Rous Marten, and the mover, to report to the Synod from time to time.—Carried. The Synod adjourned to 7.30.
