RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Thursday, October 11. (Before H. S. Wardell, Esq., K.M.) DRUNKENNESS. George Arnold was charged with the above offence. It being his first offence, he was dismissed with a caution. A KAID CPON THE DRAPERS. John H. Thompson, alias J. de Leon, an old man, was charged with having stolen, on October 9, one pair of trousers, value 20s. 6tL, the property of McDowell and Co. The prisoner pleaded not guilty. W. J. Heading, a young mon in the employ of Mr. McDowell, deposed to missing the trousers on the day named. The trousers were produced, and identified by witness. Charles West, barber (engaged in Mr. Jones’s shop, Willis-street), stated that on Tuesday last the prisoner offered to sell him the trousers produced, saying that he had bought them for £l, but offered to let witnesss have them for 12s. Witness refused to purchase, and the trousers, rolled in paper, were left on the counter. Detective Farrell deposed to finding the trousers in Jones’s shop. The same prisoner was also charged with . stealing a coat, trousers, and vest, value £3 17s. 6d., from the premues of Mr. James Smith, Cuba-street. The suit was purchased by a seafaring man for £1 6s. from prisoner, who said he had friends who would give him no money, but would give him plenty of clothes. Witness afterwards gave the articles to Detective Farrell. One of Mr. Smith’s assistants identified the clothes, and stated that to his knowledge the goods had not been sold. \ third charge was laid against the prisoner for stealing a coat, value 17s. 6d., from the shop of Mr. George Pine. The coat was found under prisoner’s vest after he had been arrested, and was identified by a salesman in Mr. Pirie’s shop. Detective Farrell stated that on Ist February last prisoner was convicted on two offences similar to those he was now charged with. He was again sentenced in May to six months’ imprisonment, and on the day he came out of gaol he committed the offences now complained of. His Worship considered the three charges fully proved, and sentenced the prisoner to four months’ imprisonment in each case, one sentence to take effect after the expiration of the other. BREACH OF MUNICIPAL BY-LAW. Jessie Thompson was charged with riding round the corner of Lambton-quay and Char-lotte-street at other than a walking pace. Fined 10s., and 9s. costs.
