JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —I agree with “ Vox Populi ” that lawyers are the proper persons from whom Resident Magistrates should be chosen, but am not prepared with him to ignore a claim to promotion on the part of gentlemen have held the office with credit for years, simply because they are not members of the legal profession. I think it is to be regretted that these gentlemen are not permitted to submit themselves for examination, and so test their fitness, as X believe some of them are desirous of doing. Registrars and deputy-registrars of the Supreme Court are permitted to apply to be admitted as solicitors or barristers. Why should not Resident Magistrates of, say, seven years' standing, have the same opportunity,— I am, &c., A Looker On.
