POLL CLERKS.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sib, —I am sorry to be compelled to trouble you again for a small space in your journal, upon poll clerks, &c., and their renumeration ; but although perhaps the subject possesses no interest to the public generally, it is one which affects the pockets of those, for the time being, public servants. A fortnight has elapsed since the late civic elections, and (tell it not in Gath) the deputyreturning officers and poll clerks have not received one penny of the paltry sum allowed for such officials. Whatever may be the reason for non-payment is at present a mystery. The Council, by its collector, looks for sharp payment of the rates, but it sets a very bad example in leaving myself and others without the miserable pittance we are justly entitled to. With many thanks for your former insertion of our grievances,—l am, &c., A Poll Clerk. September 26. [At the time of the election there were many complaints, not ill-founded, as to the mode in which the proceedings were conducted, but there can be no doubt that the poll clerks should be paid without any unnecessary delay. —Ed. N.Z. Times.]
