LATEST EUROPEAN NEWS. FUNERAL OE THIERS. [The following telegram was received at the New Zealand Times office at five minutes to 3 o’clock this morning]:— Bombay, Sept. 9, 2.3 p.m. Thiers’ funeral passed off without any disturbances, ■ LATEST WAR NEWS. RUSSIANS ADMIT BRING DEFEATED AT KAZELEVO WITH HEAVY LOSS. RUSSIANS COMPELLED TO RAISE SIEGE OF RUSTCHUK. FURTHER FIGHTING AT PLEVNA. CAPITULATION OF NIKSIKI. Bombay, September 9. A Vienna despatch states that Niksiki, the Montenegrin town revictnalled by Sulieman Pasha some months ago; has capitulated. Nothing fresh is reported as having occurred at Plevna. The Turks have entered Bulgaria by the Shipka Pass. • London, September 8. The Russians admit their defeat at Kazelevo, fifteen miles east of Biela, with heavy loss, and that they had to fall back upon Oatviza. The Russians are now concentrating at Biela, and have been compelled to raise the. siege of Rustchuk. The Turks threaten to bridge the Pyrgos. A battle has commenced at Plevna, but the result is not yet known. The Auckland harbor six per cent. loan of thirty-one thousand four hundred pounds has been subscribed for five-fold. The allotments ranged from one hundred and five upwards. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, Monday. An attempt was made on Saturday to assaainate Mr. Russell, the Government Astronomer, by sending to his house a case of wine which it was arranged was to explode on opening. The attempt was frustrated accidentally. The Suez mail arrived at Adelaide this morning. The news is unimportant.
