Auckland, Monday; The New Zealand Insurance Company reinsured the whole risk on the Lord Ashley, except £SOO. The Standard Insurance loses £760, and the National lnsuranoe £SOO. The flourmill and machinery at Rotorua which were burned down, was caused by a Maori hey igniting'the fern. The boy has been arrested.' The body of an infant has been found in the Papakura Creek. It is supposed that this is a cose of infanticide. : ■ . New Plymouth, Monday. The Fiery Cross has been- floated off the bank at Waitara. She has sustained no .damage. -. . • . i . . ■" A public mooting was held at Inglewood today re the Harbor question, - and was largely attended. W. Carter was voted to the chair. The meeting was held in the front of the goods shed owing to a number of people going from town, A resolution was passed to the, effect thatitwas'desirable no'person should vote atthe
meeting except those having property or residing in Inglewood, Moa, Huirangi, Tarutarutangi districts, and the German settlement. Two Inglewood settlers proposed a resolution to the effect that; the harbor is of vital importance to the agricultural and commercial of the district, which is satisfied with the rating powers of the Bill now before' the Assembly, and the settlers would cheerfully bear taxation. A show of hands was called, which resulted in 65 being held up for, and 10 against, and it was therefore carried. The next resolution was proposed by two settlers in the Huirangi District, —That the meeting emphatically condemns private agitation against the New Plymouth Harbor Bill, and asserts that the opposition petition has emanated from no public meeting or representative body, • and that a very large proportion of the signatures have been obtained through misrepresentation. This was carried by 51 for, and 17 against. There were several settlers from the Waitara present, and scrutineers were appointed to see fairplay. The subject was well discussed, and the speakers on both sidgs were listened to with attention. • Wanoanui, Monday. An empty house belonging to Mr. William Kells was burned down on Saturday night. It was insured in the New Zealand office for £4OO. The policy would have expired in a fortnight. It is believed to be the act of an incendiary. Blenhdim, Monday. William John Dark, builder, charged in the Resident Magistrate’s Court with assigning his property with intent to defraud his creditors, was remanded for a week on bail. Dunedin, Monday. George Proudfoot’s case still continues to occupy the time of the Police Court, and as it progresses it attracts considerable notice in Dunedin. Dr. Murphy was the first medical man who examined the girl; but to-day he admitted that on Thursday morning, acting under instructions from Mr. McKay (David Proudfoot’s partner), he offered the father of the prosecutrix £2OO as hush money. This was after he knew that criminal proceedings had been commenced. Timabu, Monday.' At the criminal sittings of the District Court tp-day Judge Harvey presided, Judge Ward being still ill.—George Tulford, convicted of obtaining money on false pretences by means of a valueless cheque, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, with hard labor. —John Abbotsford Craig, charged with a similar offence, was also found guilty, and sentence was deferred till to-morrow morning.
