The mutilated body of a European was said to have been seen on the-Harriet beach by natives, Search has been made for it, but it has disappeared. It is supposed to have been washed out to sea or to have been covered with sand. The body is thought to he that of a man who fell overboard from the cutter Fiery Cross when off the Sugar Loaves on the 7th August. TIMAKU, Wednesday. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, three young men, charged with stealing a turkey, were sentenced to three months’ hard labor. This is thought to be a very harsh sentence. James Binstead and Chas. Herbert, charged with perjury, arising from a civil case in the District Court, Blythe v. Wadsworth, were dismissed. The first' concert of the Timarn Harmonic Society takes places to-morrow evening. The oratorio of “ Athalie ” will be produced. It promises to be a great success. ’ Oamaiiu, Wednesday, A workman named David Jamieson, engaged at Mr. T. Meek’s new residence, Allen street,* dropped down dead this afternoon. It is supposed the cause was heart disease, as he had been suffering from that' complaint for many years.* Christchurch, Wednesday. A public trial of the first piano made in this island, one of Cutler and Farron’s manufacture, took place this afternoon, with a very satisfactory result. The piano compared creditably with the best English instruments.

' A fall of earth at the All Nations mine, Ballarat, killed two men, arid injured a third. The weather is very dry,- and only a little rain has fallen, mostly near the coast. ; The continued drought is very disastrous. “ Lohengren ” continues a great success at the Opera House. : The Mayor’s fancy dress ball last night was a brilliant affair. Sixteen hundred visitors and the Governor were present.
