Timaru, Saturday. The Customs revenue for the month was £1865 7s. Id. There were terrific N.W. and S.W. gales last night and to-day, with showers of hail, sleet, and rain. Several telegraph poles were blown down north of Timaru, stopping telegraphic communication, but it has been restored this morning. Tokomaihhio, Saturday. A numerously attended and important meeting of Catholics residing at Milton and Arrowtown protested against the injustice of the Education Bill as regards the capitation allowance and exemption certificates. It was resolved to publish in the Press at election times the names of the members who vote against justice to the Catholics. Dunedin, Sunday. The Dunedin football team were entertained at dinner last night. Bishop Neville was in the chair. About seventy persons were present. Mr. Pope has resigned his appointment at the Girls’ High School. Of the five assistant lady teachers at that establishment there were two sisters and one daughter of the Lady Principal. This fact, together with the reappointment of Mr. Pope and the supposition that a daughter of a member of the Education Board was to be appointed during Miss Bums’ absence, led to charges of nepotism and to the resignations, which include the chief music master and the entire staff, with the exception of Miss A. Hiue. Riverton, Friday. At a meeting of the County Council of Wallace to-day Daniel Durhridgo was appointed inspector of works, collector, and valuator, at a
salary of £2OO a year. The roads from Ota tutu to Marao and from Otatutu to BlacJc mount have been proclaimed county roads. Invercargill, Saturday. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day two respectable-looking bricklayers, named respectively William Woodworth and George Barley, were charged by the police with stealing at various times ornamental trees from three different nurseries. A large amount of evidence was taken. The case was remanded till Monday. An important point was raised whether larceny can bo established when there is no dwelling-house in a nursery ground.
