Bombay, August 31, 2.19 a.m. A Turkish force from Eski Djuma crossed the Lorn near Jaslar, where the Russians were defeated and compelled to fall back from the Lorn.’ The Turks from Rasgrad advanced to Turlak, but were repulsed, the Russians capturing two guns. A great battle is imminent. The Turks have assumed the offensive along the whole line from the Danube to the Balkans. Bombay, September 1, 1.15 p.m. Mehemet Ali telegraphs that there were nine hours’ desperate fighting on the 30th at Karrakassauler, on the right bank of the Lom. The place was repeatedly taken and retaken, but eventually remained in the possession of the Turks. The Russians retreated in disorder, being hotly pursued, and were compelled to abandon their artillery, with a loss of 4000 men and immense booty. The Turkish loss was 3000. Sydney, September 1.
