COMMERCIAL.
The amount of Customs revenue collected at the port of Wellington for the month of August was £17,850 lis 10d,as against £14,452 8s 7d for the same montli last year. The import trade continues moderately brisk, but we hear of no large lines changing hands, and prices remain unaltered from our last week's quotations. Kerosene, owing to the arrival of the Elsinore, 13 slightly easier, as is also sugar, but the reduction In value i 3 not sufficiently pronounced to require comment. Stocks continue heavy. In colonial produce prices rule low, as-larger quantities are forced upon the market from Canterbury and Oamaru than is altogether judicious. Cheese moves off slowly at 01 to 7d for prime Canterbury. Bacon and hams 8d to Od for well cured lots in goqd condition. Keg butter dull at 8(1. Flour, full, stocks ; holders are asking £l7 10s to £lB for best mills in sacks, but report sales at £lB 10s. Oats ate firm at Hs 8d to 4s; fowl feed, SsCd to 4s Cd ; potatoes, COsper ton ; sales by auction; 555; market stocked.
