(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Baloldtha, Wednesday. The Town Council have resolved to take the necessary steps for adopting the Municipal Act.
A numerously signed petition has been forwarded to the Minister of Justioe, praying for a new. Court House. The present one, which is far too • small, is built upon a street, and must be removed.
The Council has procured trees, so as to plant avenues in the street. Christchurch, Wednesday. The land sales this month will be upwards of £160,000.: , ’ At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Ci mmeroo the following report of the subcommittee was unanimously ‘ adopted :■ —That the committee’s' report to the Chamber, that having considered the Victorian Act Amend-
meni Act to alter law relating to bills of sale, dated December 22, 1§76, they think it would prove beneficial to the mercantile public to introduce such an Act into this colony. They would further recommend that provision be made, in any proposed legislation on the subject, that holders of acceptances or promissory notes, although not at the time actually due, should be admitted to lodge caveats against proposed bills of sale within the fourteen days allowed under clause 6 of the Victorian Act. The committee recommend that this Act should not in any way extend to bills of sale over live stock (cattle, sheep, &c.), or to liens on wool, or to growing crops of grain under the Wool and Oil Securities Act, or to agricultural liens. Timaeu, Wednesday.
• The football match, Dunedin v. Timaru, was played late this afternoon during a downpour of rain. The following were the Timaru team :—Hamersley (captain), Hamerton, Fox, Knubley, Black, Stranger, McPherson, Goodwin, Fraser, McLaren, Turnbull, Craig, Verity, Pigeon, and Flint ; emergency men, Hales and Brett. The match was played in Mr. Archer’s paddock, near the town. There were very few spectators. Dunedin won the toss, and splendid play ensued on both sides. The men were matched evenly. Dunedin won by four points ; Timaru, 0. Prior to the game commencing the Dunedin team were entertained at dinner by the Timaru men at the Ship Hotel. The former left for Dunedin by steamer at halfpast five, amidst the hearty cheers of a large crowd assembled to witness their departure.
AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY. (PEE CITY OP SYDNEY AT AUCKLAND.) Sydney, August 24. There has been great, destruction of property at Wallsend, Newcastle, owing to the falling in of the coalpits. The Wesleyan Chapel has disappeared, and Watkins’ Hotel has settled down. The streets are full of great openings. Considerable alarm prevails in the district. At the Brisbane Exhibition there were twenty thousand visitors in two days. The Governor of Queensland and Commodore Hoskins attended a ball at Queensland in aid of a society to prevent cruelty to animals. All the business places in Gulgong were closed for a day of humiliation and prayer for rain.
Thomas Walker, formerly an undertaker, and a - member of the Sydney Municipal Council, has established his title to property in Wales to the value of a million sterling.
Melbourne, August 24. The land tax resolutions have been carried. The attempt to float the City of Foochow is abandoned.
In reply to a question the Government said they were determined to carry out protection in its entirety. •
