COMMERCIAL.
We report a fair average amount of business done during the past month: but owing to the..large stocks in importers’bands and increased competition In all branches of trade ; we can, note no improvement in prices. Trade may be considered healthy, if not'o'ver profitable; and cnrrfent bills are regularly met. The greatly enhanced yoXue of all building sites, and the large and handsome; buildings, now in course vl erection, mast aiford sufficient evidence that thls city is progressing to an extent that the motft sanguine could ‘ itanhy have anticipatedrwithin so short a? period:; and owners of Dnd must have been agreeably surprised,at. tlie results of some recent sales, where acres that a few years back would have been pirted with for £SO or £OO now realfse twrtlmes that amount. Among other evidences of progress we may note that since the Ist of the month no less than six ships have arrived from Newcastle with over 8300'tons coal/ The arrival of the East Lothian from Singapore, laden with Eastern produce, is another event, of the, month; she is the first of a lino of regular traders due to tEe.enterprise of Messrs.
