(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Tuesday. William White , Middeley, an aged man, charged with an assault upon a girl named Catherine Carr, twelve years old, was remanded. Kelson, Tuesday. The shares in the Queen Bee Wreck Recovery Company are rising. The original price was £SO ; they are now selling at £320. Kumara, Tuesday. Mr. E. J. Seddon was elected first Mayor of Kumara yesterday, obtaining ■ a majority of thirty over his opponent Dungan. Dunedin, Tuesday. A general meeting of the members of the Otago Kailway Employes Benefit Society was held last night, for the purpose of considering a proposal from the superintending engineer at Christchurch, that the Dunedin society should amalgamate with that of Christchurch. The following resolution was carried.;—“That this society agrees to amalgamate with the Christchurch Benefit and such other railway benefit societies as exist in the colony, on condition that this society’s rules be adopted, and that the head office be permanently held in Dunedin.” A fire occurred in George-street last night, which resulted in the destruction; of three small shops. The insurance offices are interested to the following extent£7oo. In the Globe, £3OO ; in the Standard, £3OO ; in the Victorian, £IOO. , A general meeting of the committee of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held to-day. Several delegates from country associations were present, and a liberal programme was adopted. The show takes place on the 29th of November, when every effort will be made to render it a success. Christchurch, Monday. A meeting of the Jewish congregation was held last night to consider the new Education Bill. The following resolutions were adopted : —That a clause be inserted setting forth that the teaching in public schools should be entirely secular, in order to prevent a distinction being made between different denominations. That after the word “books” in clause 64 the words “of anon-religious character” bo inserted. That in clause 75-a third division be added, stating that any child prevented from attending school for religious reasons should be counted as present, providing a certificate or letter to that effect be presented by the parents or guardians of such children. That division 3 of clause 85 be expunged. That a copy of the above resolutions be forwarded to the presidents of the Dunedin, Wellington, and Auckland congregations, asking their cooperation, with a view to obtain the necessary alterations in the Bill.' "
