THE ’ RUSSIANS CALLING OUT THE IMPERIAL GUARD. THE NEXT BATTLE IN EUROPE WILL BE DECISIVE. THE LAST MAN IN RUSSIA ORDERED TO THE FRONT. THE WAR IN ASIA. [The following telegram was received at the New Zealand Times office at ten minutes to three o'clock this morning]:— Bombay, August 13,10 p.m. The Russian Guard has been called into active service as well as men capable of bearing arms who have been hitherto exempt. General Gourka has gone to St. Petersburg from Bulgaria to bring the Imperial Guard to the seat of war. Wellesley has returned to Bulgaria. In Asia indecisive fighting has taken place at Batum. . . The following telegram has been received by the Government from the Agent-General London, August 16. The Russians have evacuated the Balkans with heavy loss. A second Danube bridge has been completed, and large reinforcements of Russians are crossing. Rustcbuk is being bombarded, and the fighting is going on at different points, without any very important results. Mehemet Ali and Sulieman Pasha are pushing on to effect a junction, and the Russians, who have been reinforced, are advancing their centre and left wing. An important battle is expected. There have been frightful massacres by the Turks, without distinction of age or sex. Revolted towns and villages have been burnt in every direction. The Russians are suffering from fever and dysentery. The Turkish troops are healthy. Sydney, Saturday. Parliament has adjourned to the 18th of September. A motion disapproving of the appointment of Garrett has been negatived. A very destructive fire has occurred at Gympie, Queensland. Several persons were seriously injured. Arrived.—Taiaro'a.
