COMMERCIAL.
The import trade has been dull during the past week and coaplaints aro pretty general, but there, must be, notwithstanding a large amount of business of one kind or another doing, when one considers the large amount of goods sent daily out of, the city by. dray, and the steady increase of shipments coastwise. Stocks are in excess, and competition so strong that profits are cut down to a shade, and as many traders' object to sell without a reasonable profit, they find a difficulty in doing business, but the business Is done] nevertheless. There is no change in prices, quotations remaining low, and in favor of buyers. ; . j (Jolonial produce also rules low. Butter cannot bej quoted higher than 9fl, for prime and in kegs; much; of the stock on band is faulty, having been kept over too long; prime new cure has been sold at lid ;' cheese, overstocked ; bacon and hams, do ; only; saleable at auction at a very low figure. Flour has l been brought in from the South to a considerable in-| crease of the stock in hand, and prices of Oamarui and Canterbury mills are weaker ; we quote £lB toi £l9 for best brands in sacks. Oats are in demand, and good business is being done at 3s 6d to Ss Od.
