; * (PER PRESS ASENCT.) Napier, Monday. The commission re the libel action, Bussell against the \Yaha Maori, continues. “ Alice’s” cross-examination is not finished yet. Talking the other day, after her examination, she said that Mr. Bussell stared at her too much. The Waipukurau Biding election terminated in favor of Mr. Sydney Johnston, with eleven majority over the Hon. H. B. Bussell. It ia said that there is a sort of understanding that the election will not be appealed against; but if .it were, it would be almost sure to he upset, as neither Waipawa nor any other of the counties in this provincial district have complied with the Act in giving notice of the place where the roll may be inspected during tho period set forth in the Act. The Hospital Committee have accepted the design of Mr. Dugleby,' of Napier. The Wellington competitors were Messrs. Clayton, Tait, and Burrows. The Auckland competitors were Messrs. A fatal stabbing case occurred here on Saturday night. The facts are reported as follows : —Henry Powell, formerly of the Christchurch police force, lately returned from Kumara, and came to town on Saturday evening. He met a woman named Elizabeth. Lynch, who cohabited with a German named Kirk Kebede. Powell asked Lynch to have a drink, and they went together to Barrett’s Hotel, While there Lynch told Powell that her husband, meaning Kebede, was playing cards in a back room of the hotel, and asked Powell to go home with her. Powell did so, but had, not been there long when Kebede came in and turned Powell out, Kebede . then locked Lynch in the house, and went back to the hotel, but returned about an hour afterwards, and found Lynch and Powell in the bedroom, the latter having evidently got in at the window. Kebede again turned Powell cut. After this, according to one statement, Kebede being excited, picked up a chisel, ran after Powell, and stabbed him; but, according to another,

He was taken .to the hospital-by a con-, stable,’ where he died on Sunday., At first the wound was hot considered dangerous, and no measures were adopted, to have Powell s depo-j sitions taken until too late. Kebeds and Lynch Were brought ,up at the Magistrates Court,; and remanded till to-morrow. An inquest was held to-day, and adjourned. ! ■ The Canterbury Hiint Club had good sport on Saturday, when a hare was killed after a smart run. A fall of snow occurred this morning. ' >

• The dwelling-house 'and furniture of Mr.j John McNeil was totally consumed at five, o’clock this morning., The origin of the'fire is unknown. Mr. McNeil and family, except •the two oldest boys, have been from home'since) last week. The house was insured in the, ■New Zealand office for £950. The ground is covered with snow this morning, £md it is bitterly cold. - - The nomination of Councillors to-day resulted as follows-:—For South Ward; Mr. John McDonald ; for North Ward, Mr. Robt.
