A preliminary meeting of master ironworkers was held last evening, with the object of urging on the Government the advisability of having rolling and other plant for public works executed in New Zealand. The principal iron-founders in Dunedin were represented. After arranging preliminaries the meeting adjourned to Wednesday. A meeting of artisans for the same object is called for Friday. At a meeting of the Macandrew Testimonial Committee it was resolved that the presentation should take place at the theatre on Friday evening next. Macandrew is to be entertained at a banquet on the same evening. The Mayor will make the presentation—his and Macandrew’s will be the only speeches. The District Engineer has received instructions to set apart four miles on the Balolutha end of the Clutha-Clinton section of the railway for the purpose of giving work to the unemployed. At a largely attended meeting in St. Paul’s sohoolhouse last night, resolutions and petitions in favor of religious instruction being given in Government day schools during school hours were unanimously adopted. . Mayoral nominations for Dunedin.took place at noon to-day ; the candidates are—R. H. Leary, B. Isaac, and W. Woodland. Mr. J. B. Bradshaw received to-day applications for 5500 shares in the new insurance company. Christchurch, Tuesday.
At the Chamber of Commerce meeting yesterday afternoon the report of the committee condemning several portions of the new railway tariff was adopted, and a deputation appointed to wait on the Minister for Public Works with certain recommendations. The Christchurch Medical School has been formally incorporated with the Canterbury College. The next Grand National Steeplechase will be held at Timaru on 22nd August. The Conference of Municipal Representatives at Wellington will be held about Ist August. A conference of Road Board chairmen was held to-day. There was a large attendance. Several resolutions suggesting alterations in Road Board laws were adopted, and ordered to be forwarded to the Minister for Public Works. The meeting then adjourned till after the first reading of the Road Boards and Public Works Bill. Auckland, Tuesday. At a meeting of Hamilton Ward’s creditors the liabilities were stated to be £6BOO, and the assets £7IOO. The estate is expected to pay twenty shillings in the pound. A deed in favor of trustees was assented to. At a meeting of Sutton’s creditors the liabilities were stated to be £4633, assets £3OOO. An assignment in favor of the creditors was accepted. Marks’ creditors held a meeting; liabilities £2BOO, assets £IOBO. The estate has been assigned. At the pigeon match, Perkins v. Maxwell, of Christchurch, Perkins scored 17, Maxwell 14, Perkins winning by 3 points.
The Hawea, for the South, took the following members:—Reader Wood, Swanson, Dignan, Tole, Hamlin, Williams, J. S. Macfarlane, Lusk, Nahe, Colonel Kenny, and Chamberlin.
