(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Thursday. The Rev. Mr. Monro has been inducted to St. Luke’s, Presbyterian Church.
The Hon. Dr. Pollen and the Hon. Mr. Whitaker leave per Hinemoa at two to-morrow afternoon.
The members of the Presbytery have adopted a petition to the Assembly, embodying the permissive licensing principle. The three prisoners, charged with rape on an old woman at Howick, were acquitted, the evidence of the prosecutrix being unsupported, and the evidence for the defence shewing her to be intemperate, with a bad memory. When discharged, Hugh McKenzie, one of the prisoners charged with the commission of the offence, knelt in the dock, and publicly thanked God for his delivery. Hateni, a Maori, charged with manslaughter, was discharged, the Judge expressing the opinion that there was not sufficient evidence to go to the jury. Mr. Cox, M.H.R., addressed his constituents at Te Awamutu, Waikato. A vote of want of confidence was passed by a large majority. Dunedin, Thursday.
The railway committee will meet on Monday evening to appoint a deputation to proceed to Wellington. The sitting of the Conference of Chairmen of the County Councils is concluded. During the three days’ sitting they considered the provisions of the Public Works, Financial Arrangements, and Counties Acts, which have been fully discussed, and a number of suggestions made tor their amendment. Those suggestions are to be printed and forwarded to all County Councils in the|provincial district, and also to the Hon. the Colonial Secretary. The Chairman of the Conference, Vincent Pyke, was requested to support the proposed amendment in his place in the House of Assembly, and Comity Councils are to be asked to take the suggestions into their consideration and report the result of their deliberations to Mr. Pyke for his use in the Assembly. The Harbor Board this afternoon resolved that the wharves and quays reserves, concerning which the General Assembly decided in favor of the Board last year, should be given back to the City Council. ■ At the Supreme Court to-day, Margaret Henderson, charged with perjury, was acquitted. This concluded the criminal sessio n Westport, Thursday.
A smart shock of earthquake was felt here at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday, lasting 10 seconds. Nelson, Thursday.
A severe shock of earthquake was felt here yesterday afternoon at 4.26. Direction from S.W.
